Rand Bishop’s dreams of Olympic gold were shattered years ago but he’s left that all behind, settling into a new career and lifestyle that would make any man jealous. While he may not be competitively racing down the ski slopes anymore, he’s just as happy getting his rocks off as a Fantasy Maker for The Silo.   He’s good at what he does.  Damn good.  But while life couldn’t be better for Rand, it seems to be falling apart for Catherine Lyons Vaughn, the dark haired, brown-eyed beauty that has captivated an entire sex club.  Having spent years degrading herself on her husband’s whim and now left destitute after his death, Catherine has hit rock bottom. With nothing but her body to peddle, Catherine is merely trying to figure out how to survive in a harsh, cruel world. Lucky for her, Rand has taken her under his tattooed wing, and he’s determined to give her a safe life where she can be the woman she was always meant to be.  Now all Catherine has to do is believe she deserves the chance.

My Review:

Holy Hannah!!!  The Wicked Horse series is back and the dreaded sophomore slump of book two, Wicked Lust has been shaken off and left far, far in the past!!

Rand Bishop has intimate knowledge of Catherine Lyons.  Hell, most of the men at The Wicked Horse have intimate knowledge of Catherine Lyons.  She is wealthy beyond measure, has a one-foot-in-the grave husband, and loves being the center of attention in a good old fashioned gang bang.  At least, that’s what Rand thought.  Turns out, Catherine prefers to be called, Cat, her billionaire husband, who was, incidentally a sick f&%# is now dead, and since she’s sleeping in her car, she must not be wealthy beyond measure.

On more than one occasion, Rand has been accused of having a well-developed case of white knight syndrome.  He just can’t refuse a damsel in distress and when he finds Cat sleeping in her car outside The Wicked Horse, he is left with no choice but to take her in until she can get back on her feet.  Cat has been so warped by her sick and twisted deceased husband and her past that she sees her body as her one and only thing of value.  Her self-esteem and sense of self-worth are non-existent and though Rand dearly loves getting kinky with Cat, he needs her to understand his help is a no-strings-attached offer.  Since the two have already been intimate with one another, there is a certain level of trust between them but that level increases quickly as Cat begins to open up to Rand about her life and her current situation.

Rand is appalled by the things Cat tells him and determines he will help her even if there aren’t any “benefits” involved in their arrangement.  Given her past, both distant and near, Cat has a hard time trusting others but with Rand, she has always felt safe.  Though she believes she isn’t good enough to really be with Rand, Cat decides to accept his help for what it is and enjoy her time by his side for as long as it lasts.  The help Cat needs seems to compound with every new discovery.  Her now-ex-stepson is vile and looking to either make her his mistress or deny her inheritance, someone takes a shot at her life, and her slimy, lowlife mother keeps sniffing around looking for a ginormous handout.  Yeah, Cat needs help if she is every going to get back on her feet.

The Bottom Line:  LOVED. THIS. BOOK.  From the opening page to the very last word, I loved this book.  Both Rand and Cat have made appearances in the two previous installments of the series so getting their full story is both timely and welcome.  Wicked Need is what I expect out of Sawyer Bennett and I was not disappointed.  This book has everything I enjoy in my reads: an interesting and slightly twisted plot, some truly sick and perverse characters which give the plot a whole new level of awesome, some kinky f*^$ery, two main characters who are thoroughly likeable, and old characters who make help appearances.  Wicked Need is sort of the total package for me and I am so glad to see the series once again on the path of awesome.

Question: What happens when a thirty-year-old virgin hires a sex surrogate to take care of her “little problem”?  Answer: Lots of laughs and tons of heat. You’ll be left wanting a Dr. Ryan Andrews of your own.  Warning: This story contains mature humor, a lot of cursing, and of course, sexual situations. It’s intended for adult readers who enjoy that kind of thing.  Sexual Surrogate (Definition): A sexual surrogate, sometimes called a surrogate partner, is a member of a sex therapy team consisting of client(s), supervising therapist, and surrogate. Some couples attend sexual surrogacy sessions together, while some people (either single or in a couple) attend them alone. The surrogate engages in education and often intimate physical contact and/or sexual activity with clients to achieve a therapeutic goal. – Wikipedia

My Review:

**REVIEW IS SPOILERISH**

Dear Reader,

I think you can tell from my star rating that I was not at all impressed with Elizabeth Brown’s The Lessons.  As always, I don’t feel like I can just slap a number on a review without explaining myself.

My primary objection to this read is the fact that nearly every character is lying piece of crap.  Natalie literally moves across the country so no one she knows will know she is still a virgin at the age of thirty.  You see, Natalie had a plan in place for her life, one which involved doing all the big life things on a schedule and that schedule was not to be deviated from.  Unfortunately, when her first serious boyfriend came out of the closet, well, the plan was well and truly derailed!!

In order to get her plan back on track, Natalie has to lay the groundwork and she does this researching sexual surrogates.  Knowing this is a service that is generally reserved for people with actual sexual issues, Natalie has to build an entire backstory in order to be accepted into the program.  Not only does she make up at least two boyfriends but she also makes up abuse and lets the idea of a fictional rape cross her mind in order to secure her place with the shrink.  I really should have stopped reading at this point but Natalie acknowledges how wrong this would be.  But making up boyfriends and other forms of abuse is OK??

Moving on . . . . once Natalie begins her “treatment” she is to meet with a man who will help her overcome her sexual issues (and by that I mean her virginity!) and move on with her life and plan.  It just so happens the man she is meant to work with is the ONLY man she has met since moving from New York.  Really??  She moved to California and the only person (other than the shrink) she has had a real conversation is, is to be her sexual surrogate???  Sorry, but California is a big state and I just don’t believe in coincidence that much.

Moving further on . . . let’s talk about the breach of ethics that runs rampant in this read.  One, there is the hot to trot sexual surrogate who knows he should remove himself from Natalie’s case but is just too damn attracted to her.  Repeating over and over again how wrong his involvement is yet continuing to have sex with Natalie just doesn’t help the situation.  Additionally, there is the actual shrink and her actions.  I won’t give them away here but suffice it to say, she is a completely wretched human being.

The Bottom Line: I read The Lessons, cover to cover and can’t honestly say why I didn’t DNF this read.  The things I listed above as problems for me with this read are really just the tip of the iceberg.  There isn’t a single character in this read that is likeable let alone relatable and worth rooting for.  The cover and synopsis offers a whole lot of promise but, unfortunately the story just doesn’t deliver.

My Review:

Georgie Randall likes her sex a tiny bit off the beaten path.  Nothing too kinky or crazy but certainly more than plain old vanilla.  While there’s certainly nothing wrong with Georgie or her sexual preferences, she probably shouldn’t mix them with alcohol.  But mix with alcohol she did and since that night, Georgie has lived in fear of that night being revealed  . . . . again.  The first time that night got shared with the public, Georgie left school and the state, the second time the night was revealed she lost her fiancé and left the state.

For the past couple of years, Georgie has lived a lonely life in Amityville, Long Island.  She loves her job as a bartender but because of her past, she has not allowed herself to get close to anyone, even her co-workers.  If she isn’t going to have friends, Georgie certainly isn’t going to have a boyfriend or even the occasional lover.  The chance of her past coming back to bite her on the ass yet again is just too great a risk.  Fate is a funny thing and when her boss goes into the hospital, his son, Derek is called in to help carry the load.  Derek is dead sexy, frustrating as all hell and Georgie is finding it hard to stick to her no dating rule.  Especially when she discovers Derek likes his sex a tiny bit off the beaten path as well.

Derek has no intention of taking over his father’s bar but he also doesn’t want to see it go under.  Reluctantly, Derek agrees to watch over the bar and is happy to find there is more than just good alcohol there, there’s also Georgie.  Georgie fascinates Derek and when he discovers she likes her sex just the same way he does, well, he starts thinking about a bit more than one off.  In fact, for the first time in his life, Derek is thinking that maybe, just maybe Georgie could be the woman he does happily ever after with.  Unfortunately, like Georgie, Derek has a bit of a secret of his own and it may be just big enough to cause Georgie to head for the hills and never look back.

The Bottom Line:  I really enjoyed this second novella-length installment of the Follow That Dress series.  Rather than embracing who she is and celebrating her sexuality, Georgie has worked hard to hide who she is.  To be fair, the couple of times Georgie’s proclivities have been revealed it hasn’t gone well so she is a bit gun shy.  Derek doesn’t make her feel ashamed at all about who she is and what she wants but he also doesn’t know the whole story until he is emotionally invested.  Of course, there has to be drama before the HEA and there certainly is drama.  The drama and the sex are both just about right for this length of read with neither competing for the other for the spotlight.  Both Georgie and Derek are likeable characters and yes, the dress shows up in this read too 🙂

My Rating: 5/5 stars

My Mini-Review:

Haley Miller has a reputation to uphold and damn it all if she is going to let her hard earned party girl persona fade into the past.  The problem with maintaining her reputation is twofold: 1) she has been logging 80 hours work weeks between two cities and 2) the guy she has lusted after and crushed on since high school just isn’t into party girls with a reputation.

Seth Gardner has a dilemma on his hands.  His aunt and uncle are in a financial bind thanks to their neighbor and his bad business practices.  That neighbor just happens to be Haley Miller’s dad and Haley Miller just happens to be the girl Seth has lusted after and crushed on since high school.  How to deal with a dilemma????  In a perfect world, the two would just confess their feelings to each other and be done with it.  In a naughty world, Seth will uncharacteristically answer and online posting by Haley to fulfill her second wildest fantasy, to orgasm while tending bar.  Thank goodness this is a naughty world J

When the time and date of her scheduled “encounter” arrives, Haley has no idea who her mystery man is.  She is excited, almost to the point of distraction until she runs into Seth.  The encounter with the mystery man feels like a betrayal of her feelings for Seth and she doesn’t want to risk running him off.  Unfortunately, circumstances prevent her from cancelling the encounter and before she knows it, Haley is mixing up chocolate martinis for her friends while her mystery man plays her lower body like a finely tuned instrument.  Her mystery man isn’t just good, he is fanfreakintastic and is she finds out who he is, there may just be a real future for the two of them.

The Bottom Line:  The Bad Boy’s Guarantee is by far the hottest book in this novella series and I loved every minute of it!!  Both Haley and Seth are completely likeable characters who are in really tough positions.  Haley wants nothing more than to help her dad out but her dad has been far less than honest about his financial situation.  Seth is determined to see his aunt and uncle back on sure financial footing and can only do that if he gets some straight and honest answers out of Haley’s dad.  Complicating everything is the intense attraction Haley and Seth feel for one another and the very real feelings both have been harboring since high school.  This isn’t just sweet HEA, it’s also a dirty little read that is funny and intense.  Haley and Seth are by far my two favorite Regret Hollow characters and I so hope they make an appearance in the final installment of the series.

Teaser Guarantee

Excerpt from The Bad Boy’s Guarantee (Book #3: The Bad Boys of Regret Hollow):

“I have the missing ingredient. Chocolate martini lovers, gather round,” Haley called out from across the room.

Seth clicked off the phone and switched it to silent. He’d never be the life of the party like Haley, but he wasn’t anyone’s burden anymore. Time to crawl out from under the counter and stand so he could confront her like he’d planned.

“I’m gathering! Don’t even think about putting that half-and-half in the mini-fridge,” another female proclaimed.

Haley’s shapely legs sauntered around the corner straight for him, while his own legs refused to budge. She stopped in front of him, and he braced for the inevitable question of what the hell he was doing sitting on the floor under there. But she didn’t look down, simply concentrated on organizing something on top of the counter.

Her absolute immersion in the bartending duties hurt. As fast as they’d come together in the kitchen, she’d moved on just as quickly. Other women recognized Seth had something to offer, but the one woman who revved his libido into overdrive never gave him a chance. Maybe she deliberately didn’t check under the counter because she expected her fantasy lover to be there, and on the site, he’d stupidly requested not to be identified.

Tomorrow, he had to work with Aunt Cheryl and Uncle Mike to find every bit of legal ground they could stand on to keep the pizzeria open. Monday, he’d file motions and countermotions and fight with every avenue available to save their livelihood.

After all these years of ignoring him, Haley wasn’t going to suddenly look at him like he was relationship material or even hookup material. But he had an opportunity right now to drop his boring good-guy image and do something shockingly wicked. If her biggest fantasy was to come while she poured a bunch of drinks for people, then he’d give her an orgasm she’d never forget, even if his balls turned blue and she never believed he had enough bad boy inside him to be worthy of her notice.

My Review:

It’s really hard for me to resist a cover and title like Bound and Teased has and so, I did not resist 🙂

This was a one-sitting read for me and though it has a very, very thin plot I still enjoyed the read but mostly, I enjoyed the hot sex.  Here’s the breakdown . . .

After nearly a decade away from home, Katie Crane has decided it’s time to return to the only two men she has ever truly loved.  Jed Malloy and Ry McCade have made a life for themselves in their small hometown.  One is the sheriff and one is horse trainer and both are desperately in love with one another and the girl who ran from them.  Though Jed and Ry have made a nice life for themselves, both have always hoped Katie would come back to them.  One day, she does . . . .

When Katie left Jed and Ry, she was barely 18 years old and under the mistaken impression that they would somehow ruin her life is she stayed with them and indulged in any sort of relationship.  The whole town would know and she would be participating in an unnatural relationship.  Or so her father told her.  And so, Katie took off to New York with her father, made a career for herself, found an asshole boyfriend, and discovered a whole lot of truly awful stuff related to her dad and boyfriend.  Nothing like, shock, revulsion, anger, and outrage to make a girl pack her bags and leave town.

Within days of arriving back in town, Katie is reunited with Jed and Ry and everyone makes their intentions crystal clear.  Jed and Ry want Katie, Katie wants Jed and Ry but there must be ground rules.  Katie isn’t interested in being anyone’s slave but she is interested in submitting sexually.  Jed and Ry aren’t interested in a slave either but they are very interested in Katie’s submission to them both.  Additionally, they are interested in Katie’s response to their continued existence as a couple.  If Katie can’t accept Jed and Ry as a couple, then there really is no future for the three of them. For weeks, the three experiment with one another in a variety of ways with most of the encounters going exquisitely well.  A few times, things go a bit wonky which leads Katie to having to reveal things about her past she thought were long buried.  As she quickly discovers, the boys want nothing but the best for her and are willing to go to any length to protect her.  Turns out, the boys have a lot to protect Katie from especially when her sleazy ex and father come to drag her back to New York.

The Bottom Line:  I can’t really knock Bound and Teased too much for being all about the sex because every now and again, I am totally down for a book that is all about the gratuitous sex.  As I mentioned previously, the plot is pretty thin and it feels like Katie’s past and present issues are the things that happen randomly between sex scenes.  As to those sex scenes . . . . WOWSA!!  This is where the story gets good with loads of naughty bits that varied and dirty but always respectful and safe.  Jed and Ry and creative guys and they like to play with one another just as much as they like playing with Katie.  In all, I found the naughty bits to be the best part of the read and if all you are looking for is some steamy sex with some other random bits thrown in to break up the sex, then Bound and Teased just might be the read for you 🙂

My Rating: 2½/5 stars

My Review:

And I’m right back to being disappointed . . . .

Dragon Soul is the third installment of the Dragon Falls series and like the first book, it falls short of meeting my expectations.

Sophea Long has been tasked with escorting the delightful kleptomaniac known as Mrs. P to Egypt.  Mrs. P. seems to defy all logic and stereotypes, she hits on anything even remotely male, and is quite insistent that Sophea is her guide and her protector and will be needed on every leg of her journey to her beau.  Given Mrs. P.’s age, Sophea tends to ignore much of the ramblings and twittering and does her very best to return each and every item the old bat steals from others.  Though the trip has been somewhat exhausting, Sophea has generally enjoyed herself.  Right up until the moment two men try to kill Mrs. P.  Enter Rowan Dakar, the single bright spot in this read.

Rowan Dakar has spent the better part of his adult life hiding from dragonkin.  Thanks to a total and complete clusterf*^$ when he was far younger, Rowan is known throughout dragonkin as the Dragon Breaker and should he be found, his life will likely be forfeit.  When circumstances involving a dreaded red dragon spiral out of control on a plane to Germany, Rowan is forced to get involved which effectively outs him to the world.  Mrs. P. may be a pain in his ass but Sophea is something altogether different.  Rowan is sure Sophea is a dragon but she seems to have no clue about what she is and what she is capable of.  Additionally, to Rowan’s ears Mrs. P.’s ramblings aren’t just ramblings but lore and truth about the world beyond humanity.  According to the old bat, Rowan must stay involved and continue to accompany she and Sophea on their journey.

As the journey continues, things get weirder and weirder.  Sophea not only accepts that she is, in fact dragonish, Mrs. P. acquires a gaggle of gorgeous girls to accompany her at all times, and Rowan gets a few little (and not so little) surprises from the First Dragon himself.  To complicate matters, Sophea and Rowan are wildly attracted to one another, they have to continuously complete certain terrifying tasks on Mrs. P.’s behalf, and they have to figure out how to solve the Bael problem that is still plaguing everyone.  Oh, and Mrs. P. seems to be getting younger the longer the trip goes on.  Yeah, that’s not weird at all.

The Bottom Line:  Other than Rowan and his particular story, there was little of value in this read for me.  The plot wanders almost aimlessly, Sophea is one of the single-most annoying characters in the history of literature, and the final explanation of everything is severely lacking.  Honestly, I am not at all sure what happened with this read and if it weren’t for Rowan and the reappearance of some of the older characters, including the most delightful, Gary, I probably would have DNF’d this book.  I don’t want to give up on Katie Mac because I have historically quite enjoyed her dragon books but two of three books in this latest series have fallen dramatically short of the standard set by the earlier dragon books.  Clearly, I’m going to have to rethink my love affair with Katie Mac and that makes me one very, very sad panda.

My Rating: 5/5 stars

My Review:

There is certainly no sophomore slump here as Dragon Storm comes screaming into the series with a ton of fun and some new characters.

For centuries, Constantine has lived as an outcast.  He is thought to have been the ruin of many, many dragons and now lives predominately as a spirit though he can manifest into a solid form.  Like most dragons, Constantine is handsome beyond measure but he is also, unlike most dragons, exceptionally kind, thoughtful, caring, and the bearer of a twisted sense of humor.  According to Constantine, his one true mate, Ysolde is mated to Baltic and though Constantine has accepted the reality of the situation, he isn’t at all happy about it.  In order to assuage his anger, Constantine finds new and improved ways to aggravate Baltic and awards himself points for particular reactions.  Oh, and he likes to invest in sex toys and leave some lying about the house 🙂

Because of his status among other dragons, Constantine rarely concerns himself with their affairs.  However, a chance to redeem himself wouldn’t be ignored so when he is asked to go into the underworld to retrieve an item of great importance, Constantine agrees to go.  Constantine has no intention of lingering in the underworld but finds his task hampered at every turn.  The first hampering is Bee, a fiercely frustrating Charmer (her job, not her personality) who is, incidentally working on the same problem as Constantine.  The second hampering comes in the way of a disembodied knocker by the name of Gary (Gareth, but nobody calls him that!) and the final hampering comes in the form of the crown prince of Abadon who has no intention of allowing Constantine, Bee, Gary, or his possessions to leave his realm.  Against his better judgement (and thanks to the chains!) Constantine helps Bee and Gary out of Hell and back into the real world.

Once back in the real world, Bee and Constantine determine their first course of action should be to reverse the curse that has plagued dragonkin for more than two years.  If the curse can be reversed, and Bee is certain of her abilities, then each of the dragon septs can once again talk to one another and again focus on the larger issues facing them all.  First on the list, banishing Bael’s sorry, evil ass back to Hell.  As I have come to expect in my Katie Mac reads, Dragon Storm is full of characters past and Constantine and Bee are most assuredly visited by the other dragons and their mates.  Aisling and Drake, Ysolde and Baltic, and Aiofe and Kostya all make appearances and work with Constantine and Bee to solve a lot of problems.  Thrown into the mix is the budding relationship between Constantine and Bee and how the two of them cannot only be together but also care for Gary.

The Bottom Line: I was less than impressed with the first read in this series but found myself pleasantly surprised by Dragon Storm.  This read has all the things I love in Katie Mac books: feisty dragons, JIM and GARY for serious comic relief, the appearance of older characters, and the continuation of a good and somewhat unresolved plot line.  Couple all of this with a new, fun couple like Constantin and Bee and Dragon Storm becomes all kinds of awesome.  My only complaint about this read Aiofe, I still really dislike her and that doesn’t seem to be ending any time soon.  On the bright side, Aiofe plays only a small role in this read so I didn’t let her dampen my feelings about the book as a whole. By books’ end, some of the issues are resolved but dragonkin and the world still face the challenge and threat that is Bael.  On to book three, Dragon Soul.
