Only a few months after embracing her magical powers, defeating a dark witch, and banishing a faerie prince back to his realm, sixteen-year-old Madison Riley is back in book three of the Embrace series—and doing the bidding of a demon. She has no choice but to do so if she wants him to honor the deal they made to save the life of someone she loves. Twenty years of service to a creature of hell is a big price, but one she’s willing to pay. And it sure beats the alternative: selling her soul. But life gets complicated when you’re the beck-and-call witch of a crossroad demon. Caden, the demon she serves, wants to become master of Death Himself, and with Madison at his side he has the means to do it. It’s up to Madison and her coven to foil his plans, but Caden’s intentions aren’t entirely evil—and the kisses he seals his deals with aren’t too bad either. As Caden’s motives test Madison’s trust, his shameful flirting tries her boyfriend Isaac’s patience. But being caught between two supernatural hotties is perhaps the least of her concerns when the coven’s interference in Caden’s plot might just cost Madison her life and unleash hell on earth.
My Rating: 4/5 stars
The Fearsome Four (plus Caden and a ghoul!) are back in the third installment of The Embrace series and this time, the stakes are higher than ever. Madison is still locked into her Beck-and-Call-Witch deal with Caden, Isaac is still not happy about his girlfriend running off with another guy, Kaylee has discovered she can raise the dead and, Josh is desperately hoping his girlfriend isn’t pregnant. Yeah, there’s some stuff going on . . . .
As the book opens Madison finds herself yet again losing time with Isaac in order to help Caden. Caden is hell bent (HA!) on completing a very particular task but isn’t divulging much information about said task. Madison can sense Caden is worried and his level of worry is heightened when his brother (YES! There’s a hot demon brother!!) shows up to interrupt the party. Though the brother’s conversation is cryptic at best, Madison knows the task Caden is consumed by is big, there are some nasty Hell players involved and, somehow Madison is on everyone’s radar.
Back at home . . . .
After a trip (yes, another trip!) to the cemetery, Madison and Kaylee have come home with an undead friend. More than a year ago Shane died from leukemia and most of the town attended his funeral. Within days of his resurrection, Shane’s color improves, he hasn’t started eating brains and, he is more than ready to go home. . . . .to his family who buried him a year ago. Neither Kaylee nor Madison can figure out how Kaylee was able to raise the dead and they are terrified of telling Isacc and Josh and their “accomplishment.” All they have to do is figure out how to get Shane back to dead.
For weeks, Kaylee and Madison manage to keep a lot of secrets from the boys. Since Kaylee raised Shane he is staying at her house and eating her family out of house and home. Between maintaining the spells to hide Shane and all of the evasion and half-truths, Josh is convinced Kaylee is pregnant and scared to tell him. He’s so much happier when he finds out it’s really just an un-dead dude J Madison is in even deeper trouble and she has figured out Caden is trying to reassemble a necklace that will allow him to control Death. Her late-night and long-distance adventures with Caden aren’t just cramping her love life but confusing it as Caden has made it clear he is interested in Madison and frequently finds reasons to kiss her. Nearly every day Madison has to avoid telling Isaac something or other and others are beginning to notice of her relationship with Caden. Though Madison is certain she wants Isaac, Caden is a centuries-old and very hot demon who knows how to kiss a girl.
The Bottom Line: Though Entwined is a bit of a slow starter, once things really get going about half-way through the read, it is a fast and furious pace right on through to the end. The Fearsome Four have their hands full with Shane, Kaylee’s newly discovered status as a necromancer and, Caden’s plot to control Death and Madison’s role in that plot. There is a clear division between the group as, on the one hand a coven that trusts one another and on the other hand as four teenagers with fears and insecurities about losing each other. The final showdown between good versus evil forces the coven to truly trust one another and work together. As in the previous installments of this series, the group proves they are stronger together than apart and a little help from a most surprising force, they are almost unstoppable. Make no mistake, Entwined is a fully-resolved read with no cliffhanger but it does leave me with some questions I hope Colyer will deal with in future installments of this series. Since I don’t want to spoil anything for you, dear reader, I will leave it at that 🙂
