A WOMAN OUT FOR BLOOD: Nicole Martin was only eight years old when the vampire slaves rose up in rebellion and killed her family. Now she devotes her life to finding a vaccine against vampirism, hoping to wipe out her memories—along with every bloodsucker on the planet. But there’s one thing she cannot destroy: her searing, undeniable attraction for the one man she should hate and fear the most . . .
A VAMPIRE OUT FOR REVENGE: A member of the renegade vampire MoonBound Clan, Riker is haunted by demons of his own. When he recognizes Nicole and remembers how her family enslaved his loved ones, his heart burns for vengeance. But when he kidnaps Nicole and holds her in a secret lair, his mortal enemy becomes his soul obsession, his greatest temptation, and, perhaps, his only salvation—a hot-blooded lover who could heal him with her touch . . . or bury him forever.
Nicole Martin has dedicated her life to solving the problem of vampirism. As a helpless child, Nicole was powerless to save her family as they were slaughtered by their vampire slaves but as an adult with advanced study and degrees in vampirism, Nicole is no longer helpless. As the head of her family’s multi-million dollar company, Nicole has dedicated her adult life to using vampires and their blood to heal humans and discover new ways to rid the world of what many consider to be a plague.
As a member of the Moon Clan of vampires, Riker has dedicated his life to fighting humans, saving vampires in captivity and, protecting his clan. Since the day his mate died, Riker has channeled his anger and become a fierce warrior and somewhat reckless on occasion. He is respected among his peers but everyone knows that Riker is dedicated to the warrior life and has little to no time for intimate relationships. In fact, since his mate died, Riker has not taken a single woman to his bed. The day he encounters Nicole Martin is the day Riker has to rethink everything he knows about humans.
Kidnapping Nicole Martin is the last thing Riker and his group wanted to do but when their plans go horribly awry, taking Nicole is the only option available. Forced together by circumstance, Nicole and Riker feel an instant attraction to one another but their respective experience tells each they cannot trust the other. Nicole’s time with the Moon Clan completely changes her perception of vampire’s and though she is being held against her will, she jumps in and helps where she can. Riker takes every opportunity to “educate” Nicole on the plight of vampires and what they have experienced at the hands of human like her.
Getting Nicole back to “civilization” becomes more urgent as the days pass for several reasons: 1) the Moon Clan has no interest in keeping a human no matter how helpful she is; 2) returning Nicole means the Moon Clan gets one of their own back in a prisoner exchange and; 3) the longer Riker and Nicole are near one another the stronger their attraction becomes. To say these two are facing monumental obstacles doesn’t even come close. As plot continues to unfold both Nicole and Riker are surprised by one another the lengths each is willing to go to in order to make a really craptastic situation right.
The Bottom Line: Larissa Ione has brought something new to the world of vampires and I am all over this!!! The Moon Clan Vampire series does a couple of things I am very intrigued by: 1) in this universe, vampires are still hot and sexy but they are also slaves and; 2) the vampires and their origins are tied to both demons and Native American tradition. I am loving the fact that Ione’s vampires are not just removed from society but actually in hiding from humanity as this creates a far more intense read. Riker and his clan is full of interesting personalities from their leader right on down to the mad scientist who is consumed with finding the right flavor combination of Kool-Aid. Nicole’s transition from the human world into the vampire world creates a wonderful sense of tension and drama and when she and Riker finally give into their extreme desire well, the book gets even better. I always like it when an author trots out something new and as soon as I finished this read, I trotted right on over to Amazon and bought book two in the series, Chained by Night.
THE FUTURE OF HIS TRIBE: Leader of the vampire clan MoonBound, Hunter will do what he must to save his people from extinction – or worse, a torturous eternity as vampire slaves and subjects of human experimentation. To keep his enemies at bay, he has agreed to mate a rival clan leader’s daughter in return for peace between the clans and an ally in the looming war with the humans.
THE LOVER OF HIS SOUL: But survival comes at a price. First, Hunter must break an ancient curse by successfully negotiating three deadly tests. Then he must resist the searing passions of the gorgeous vampire warrior he despises but is bound to mate. Will Hunter stay true to his word? Or will he risk everything for the woman he really loves: the vampire seductress’s identical twin sister?
At the end of book one, Bound by Night, Hunter, the leader of the MoonBound clan of vampires strikes a deal that effectively ends his life as he knows it. In order to protect his clan and prevent war, Hunter agrees to marry the daughter of a rival clan leader. Yes, life as Hunter knows it is over.
For two centuries Hunter has lived his life according to his own rules. He satisfies his needs as he sees fit, he runs his clan with a firm but not iron fist and, he works every second of every day to be nothing like his father. Now that he is contracted to marry Rasha, Hunter has a few things he has to get straight before the big day. First and foremost on the list is completing three tasks set forth by the demon Samnult. Completion of the tasks will ensure the survival of Hunter’s first born child as long as Hunter survives the tasks. Second on the list is convincing Rasha she has to complete the tasks with him and third on the list is figuring out how to stop hating the bitch queen known as Rasha.
Aylin has lived her entire life in the shadow of her twin sister, Rasha. According to clan legend and tradition, the second born twin is to be killed and any child born with a defect is to be killed. Aylin is both the second born twin and has had, since birth a twisted leg but in a cruel twist of fate, her sadistic father allowed her to live. As a member of the notoriously cruel ShadowSpawn clan, Aylin has lived her life in constant fear. Her birth status and defect have made her a constant target, her father’s backward way of thinking and cruel leadership have kept her from escaping and, her sister has only rarely come to her defense. As the sister of the bride, Aylin is expected to attend to her sister in month leading up to her mating ceremony. As such, the twins are expected to live with the MoonBound clan and under Hunter’s protection until the time of the mating.
When Hunter and Aylin meet, sparks fly but there are so many obstacles in their way. Among the obstacles, Hunter is promised to Rasha, Hunter is determined to fulfill his commitment and, Hunter knows Rasha will be a fierce companion able to help protect his clan. Though Aylin appears to be weak Hunter very quickly discovers that she is anything but and when the chips are down she is the twin he wants by his side. In a most unexpected twist, it is Aylin and not Rasha who accompanies Hunter through Samnult’s tests and it is Aylin who helps him complete the tasks at great personal cost. The return the reality is almost as harsh as the tests as Aylin and Hunter are forced to separate. Hunter’s determination to fulfill his commitment and protect his clan borders on madness and the insanity only increases the longer he is in Rasha’s presence and away from Aylin.
Aylin’s time with Hunter both in his haven and during the trials is a revelation and for the first time in her life, Aylin is able to spread her wings and fly. Hunter and his clan help Aylin to understand that life can be different, she doesn’t have to be just a possession and, she can have a life outside of the cruelty of her sister and her father. In fact, with the help of the MoonBound clan, Aylin may just be able to escape all the wretched she has ever known and have a life she can call her own. The only problem is knowing that life will likely not be at Hunter’s side.
The Bottom Line: Holy oy!! Book two of the MoonBound Vampire Clan series is even better than the first!! In this installment, Ione delves even further into the origins of vampires, their connection to Native American tribes and, Hunter’s personal history. You all know how much I loves me some history and some backstory, right?? Well, I certainly do! Hunter’s personal history very much explains his intense desire to fulfill his commitments and protect his people and once you understand where he’s coming from he’s a little easier to like. Aylin is pure perfection and I liked her instantly. Despite everything she has suffered in her life, she still has hope that her life can and will be better. She blossoms under Hunter’s attention and when she truly finds her feet, she is a force to be reckoned with. I. LOVE. HER. On the flip side, some people just get what they deserve and I am all kinds of OK with the hand Rasha and a few others were dealt in this read. Add to the mix the totally hot sex and this is a read I blazed through. This series is quickly working its way onto my list of favorites and I can’t wait for round three.
