“You have to go. I won’t be able to control myself. I’ve wanted you so bad for so long and after I’ve been in the cage…I can’t think straight.” He gives a guttural groan and his fist clenches on my hip.  Primitive. Primal. His need speaks to me. I tighten my grip on his neck and rock up to kiss him. He takes over. His kiss is hard and demanding.  “Mine.” His voice is raw, savage and for a moment I truly believe he may lose control.  He rules in the ring.  Two years ago, Jake and Amanda were going hot and heavy. But when Jake wanted more, Amanda walked away. Jake immersed himself in mixed martial arts, living life on the edge. But that didn’t dull the pain of Amanda’s rejection-until a chance encounter throws them together.  A high-powered lawyer, Amanda was a no-strings-attached kind of girl. But two years after her breakup with Jake, she still hasn’t found anyone who gets her heart pumping the way he did. And then he shows up in her boardroom, hot as sin and needing help…

But can he rule her heart?  Jake is darker, sexier, and impossible to resist. As their chemistry builds, Amanda’s not sure if she can stay in control, or if she’s finally willing to let him claim her body and soul.

My Review:

With the market currently flooded with MMA fighter novels and me being a relatively picky reader, it takes something above and beyond to keep me reading this type of novel these days. Oh, and I am a big fan of MMA so I get kind of twitchy when it’s not done right. Sarah Castille has done it right and then some 🙂

Amanda is a junior associate in a high-powered and powerful law firm and she is absolutely on track to become partner and finally earn her parents’ approval. She has gone above and beyond what is expected of her, sacrificed every free moment of her life and, made sure her behavior and demeanor are above reproach. Outside of the office, Amanda has a delightful friend with benefits and a box full of pro bono cases that she actually does cherish. In all, Amanda’s life is going exactly the way she planned it and then in the blink of an eye it is all taken from her. In a fit of anger and absolute betrayal, one of the senior partners at her law firm and, coincidentally her father’s best friend threatens to expose Amanda’s relatively naughty private life is she doesn’t sleep with him. Not one to be blackmailed and certainly not one to whore herself out, Amanda refuses to bow to her boss’s wishes and is summarily relieved of all her duties and responsibilities with the firm. With no job and the threat of total personal and professional humiliation hanging over her, Amanda retreats completely from the world.

Jake Donovan is the most beautiful man Amanda has ever seen and for two short months he was hers. Thanks to her games and total inability to commit, Amanda lost Jake and for two years has regretted the loss immensely. Imagine her surprise when it is Jake (thanks to her best friend and book one heroine, Makayla) who knocks on her door and forces her back into the world of the living. Completely confused by Jake’s presence in her life, Amanda tries to keep herself from hoping for the impossible, reconciliation and a return to a life she once loved. For Jake, his presence in Amanda’s life is completely clear and this time he doesn’t intend to lose her. From the beginning, Jake knows his road to a HEA with Amanda is going to be hard but he has no idea how hard until he is all up in the middle of her crazy.

The sexual tension between Jake and Amanda is so high that both are constantly on edge. If they are going to make it, they have to be a part of each other’s lives and that means interacting and trying to control their sexual desire so they can work through their past issues. With Jake’s encouragement, Amanda opens her own law firm, files a hefty lawsuit against her former employer and, begins training at Redemption. Her future, both personally and professionally is completely uncertain and though she is glad to have Jake back in her life, Amanda isn’t sure she has the fight in her that she needs to get to a HEA. Jake for damn sure has the fight in him but Amanda is stubborn beyond reason and even the most patient man has his limits. Unbelievably, Amanda finds a way to yet again break both their hearts and threaten their future together.

The Bottom Line: Sarah Castille and her naughty Redemption series has just stolen my heart!! I am all kinds of on board this train and willing to ride no matter where the conductor wants to go 🙂 In Your Corner isn’t just Amanda and Jake’s story but also an evolution of the series as a whole. We primarily get Jake and Amanda and their story is certainly interesting but we also get a glimpse into the lives of a whole host of other characters. There is Penny, Amanda’s feisty British assistant; Ray, the hardcore private investigator who just can’t seem to give up on Amanda; Rampage, the loveable and slightly slow Redemption fighter who just adores Amanda and, Fuzzy, the police officer and Redemption fighter who seems to always be in the middle of an Amanda-created mess. Like its predecessor, Against the Ropes, In Your Corner is a hot contemporary romance with a little bit of everything for a wide variety of readers. For myself, the Redemption series is MMA fiction done right and though the books are a bit formulaic, I just simply don’t care. 🙂

My Review:

Makayla Delaney has really never done anything the easy way. Her childhood was a series of horrors until her mother was finally able to break away from her abusive father, though she graduated at the top of her class she just can’t commit to medical school, she lives in an absolute dump with far too many people and, her financial situation is deteriorating rapidly. Above all else, Makayla can’t stomach violence of any kind and so she just can’t believe it when she finds herself desperate for money and working an extra job at Redemption, an underground MMA club full of hot, hard men who are ready to pound one another senseless.

Max Huntington aka Torment is the hottest and the hardest of the men assembled. He is wealthy beyond reason, the owner of Redemption and a lot of other stuff, he has a passion for controlled violence, he has an iron will and, as of the moment he sees her, a desire to possess Makayla Delaney. Though she is so far removed from his usual flavor of high society arm candy, Makayla is intriguing and Max knows instantly that he has found someone special. Here’s the rub: Max is a violent (though by no means cruel) man who loves to fight and be in control at all times. Thanks to her background, Makayla has no stomach for violence and giving up control to anyone, and most especially a man, scares the Hell out of her. Here’s the bigger rub: Makayla is drawn to Max like no other man before and though she is often slightly unnerved by his need for control she wants to be with him. In just a short amount of time Makayla and Max find themselves immersed in one anothers’ lives and while Max is absolutely and without doubt or hesitation ready to commit, Makayla is not nearly so sure. Breaking down her walls and allowing herself to truly experience all that is Max is one of the hardest challenges Makayla has ever faced and she just isn’t sure she is up to the challenge.

Given his need to control everything at all times Max often finds himself completely at a loss where Makayla’s behavior is concerned. Sensing his wild girl wants to try and experience more than she ever has before, Max pushes her in every way possible, including in the bedroom. Max is as fearsome in the bedroom as he is in the ring and he is constantly asking Makayla to go above and beyond her comfort zone. Though he sees signs of distress, Makayla assures Max that everything is alright and that she trusts him. Unfortunately, despite Max’s every effort to help Makayla and protect her, she pushes him away and creates a level of heartbreak neither has ever known before.

The Bottom Line: Holy Hell is this book HOT!!! Against the Ropes has it all: hot, hard bodied fighters with a soft side, plenty of excellent backstory where Makayla and Max are concerned, enough drama to fill more than one book and, some seriously fine naughty bits. This is truly a story of opposites attract and I was drawn to both characters equally from the very beginning. Though Max enjoys violence he is in no way cruel and is, in fact a very caring man with a heightened need to protect those he loves and, a troubled past of his own. Makayla is so much more than even she realizes and by Max’s side she is able to heal, to grow and, to become comfortable with herself and her (raging!) desires. That is, after she pushes him away a few times. The naughty bits are just the right level of kink for me and plentiful, to say the least. The sex never overshadows the plot or the characters but fits in perfectly and mimics the strong desires of both lead characters. Max and Makayla are a power couple in every sense of the word and a great foundation for the Redemption series. In all, I was absolutely sucked into this book and immensely pleased that the second book is already available 🙂

Love not only stings when you lose it, when it’s ripped away, but when it first sinks its teeth into you, it can cut just as raw and sting just as deep.  I had forgotten that.  Fifteen years ago I had survived my Old Man’s murder and swore to myself never again.  Never again surrender my heart.  Never again sacrifice to the Club.  At least that’s what I always believed.  Then I had to come home, and my past and present blew up in my face.  Who holds the keys to betrayal? To suspicion? To trust?  To brotherhood? To family?  To a bleeding heart?  Right now, I just might.  Some of us have to get really dirty before we can become truly clean.

1.  Meager is a fictional small town in South Dakota about an hour outside of Rapid City, SD

2.  Setting was really important to me to be able to tell this story. The lead characters were born and raised in the Dakotas and they appreciate their land, find strength in it, a nobility. They need to be there. It’s a raw, brutal landscape. But it’s also mysterious, simple, beautiful, fertile, and many textured. I’ve always been fascinated by the Great Plains. Having read the “Little House” books as a girl and then seeing the 1973 film “Badlands” as a teenager did a number on me. It seemed a very dramatic, lonely landscape that haunted my imagination. Actually now I’m reading the whole “Little House” series with my kids, and it still fascinates- the primitive power of Mother Nature, its often unforgiving character that deserved a lot of hearty respect. By the way, when Grace remarks that she once dated a guy who said the Dakotas were “a whole lot of nothing that lasted forever” and that pissed her off and she broke up with him…that’s an actual quote from a travel log of the Dakotas I had read online while doing research. I knew I had to use it somehow! I knew my characters didn’t feel that way about their country.

 3.  The name for the club “the One-Eyed Jacks” comes from the title of a western film Marlon Brando had made. He had directed it himself. It wasn’t too successful. I’m rather obsessed with Brando as an actor. He was an amazing emotional rocket on the screen. Utterly natural and realistic, unpredictable. I have a thing for the old classics. Remember, he was in the first biker flick, “The Wild Ones” that pretty much started the fascination for generations of kids. One of my favorite characters in LOCK & KEY, Butler, is a huge Brando fan.

I’ve always loved to read, and always needed to write. I like to explore what bonds a man and a woman together- the very small things and the sort of epic, the glory and the mess. Oh yeah, plenty of crazy mess. Don’t you think?

In the world of Regency England, only one thing matters — the begetting of an heir…

There is one fact I cannot hide nor deny. I have borne my husband no sons…

When Lord Jacob Fielding suffers a traumatic injury denying him more children, it devastates both his present and his future. He and his wife Jane have only daughters, and the brother in line to inherit his title and lands is a disgusting reprobate, a man who should never have power over anyone.

In desperation, Lord Fielding formulates a wicked plan. He invites his distant cousin Matthew to come and share their home…and possibly more. Jane is shocked, but cannot deny her curiosity. She loves her husband, and their situation is desperate, and Matthew is a kind, gentle, attractive man. But what can this situation bring, but tension and jealousy?

Emotions and libidos run high as the Fielding men search for a way to satisfy the need for an heir, their own lusts, and, most importantly, the desires of Lady Jane, before time runs out.

My Rating: 5/5 stars

My Review:

Lady Jane Fielding and her beloved husband Jacob, Baron of Fielding House have a very, very serious problem. Following a horrible accident, Jacob is no longer able to have children and he and Jane do not yet have a male heir. To make matters far, far worse, Jacob’s horrifyingly awful and lecherous brother, Arthur wants the title, the land, the money and, will stop at nothing to get what he wants. For Jane and Jacob, the loss of Fielding House and their legacy is absolutely unthinkable and so, a plan is hatched.

Matthew, a distant and poor cousin to Jacob has been called to Fielding House and upon his arrival he is enlightened. The plan to save Fielding House will require Jacob to step aside and allow his younger cousin to sleep with his wife in the hopes of conceiving a male heir. To be sure, all involved are uncomfortable with this plan: Jacob is having a terribly difficult time overcoming his jealousy, Matthew is quite concerned over losing the dearly held friendship with his cousin and, Jane is beside herself at the thought of taking another man into her bed. Or, is she? Matthew is a very sweet and handsome young man and Jane is certainly interested in the possibility of experiencing him. As if the situation weren’t guilt-ridden and awkward enough, it has also become urgent as Arthur is pressuring Jacob to name him heir to Fielding House. With urgency, curiosity and more than a little bit of guilt at the forefront, Jane and Matthew consummate their relationship. As matters at Fielding House go from bad to worse, Jane, Matthew and Jacob have to come to some sort of understanding where their carnal arrangement is concerned. Arthur is an ass of epic proportions and causing all kinds of trouble, Jane likes being with Matthew and her husband and, between the three of them they must find a way to preserve Fielding House.

The Bottom Line: Regency England is once again lit up with naughty in Viveka Portman’s third installment of the Regency Diaries. Jane and Jacob Fielding have a true love match and when all they have worked for is threatened, they work together to solve the problem no matter how uncomfortable it may be. I very much like the encounters between Jane and Jacob as there is true respect and affection between them which results in both being able to be brutally honest about their situation. Matthew is just a sweet, sweet wonder and his joining the family is so awkward that it is endearing and I liked him immediately. The naughty bits are delightful and the way the three solve the awkwardness of the situation is as exciting as it is naughty for its time and place. Once again, I was totally pulled into Portman’s world and glad to be there. My only complaint, the Regency Diaries are just too short 🙂

My Rating: 5/5 stars

My Review:

Bloody. Crappin’. Hell. Tori L. Ridgewood pulls no punches with round two of The Talbot Trilogy and, in fact, she comes out swinging with some serious action, some serious character development and, one really exciting read. In all, Blood and Fire is a totally character-driven read that is complimented by an ever-evolving plot that is both intricate and interesting. Since you know how much I love characters, I’m going to hit you with a heavy dose of character analysis. Here we go . . . .

Andrea: still among the evil undead but there may be some hope for her. After some really ugly moments, Andrea seems to be one of the few vampires who is actually interested in fighting her new evil nature. Is there hope for her??

Charlotte: Whew!! After realizing her worst fear – the return of de Sade – Charlotte gets all kinds of angry and realizes that she and Rayvin have the ability to bring down the Big Bad. Charlotte really comes into her own in this installment and it is good to see her overcoming her fear and taking control.

Grant: not dead, not a vampire, still totally hot, newly wolfie and, totally embarrassed by having run away from Rayvin. Grant is on a mission and once he learns how to control his new shape shifting abilities he turns his anger and self-loathing toward revenge. de Sade is going down and Rayvin will be rescued.

Jason: still among the evil undead, still missing an eye and, more evil than ever before. Jason is a nasty, nasty vampire with all kinds of plans for total domination. To take over the world he has to build an army that is loyal to none other than Jason and take out de Sade. Jason is just crazy enough to think he can pull this off and he brings Hell with him in his attempt to take over the world. By far, one of the most loathsome characters dreamt up by Ridgewood 🙂

Marcy: welcome to the fight you lovely, lovely woody creature. Marcy is an incredible fighter with the ability to cover her body with bark and branches; she can literally root herself to a position and use her branches to stake vampires at will. She has a smart mouth, a beautiful and totally capable partner and, a serious obsession with bringing down de Sade.

Rayvin: one totally pissed off, magic is on the fritz, knocked up witch!! If you thought Rayvin was mad at the end of book one, wait until you see her now. Essentially, de Sade rapes her on a regular basis, she can’t fight back thanks to a nasty little device de Sade implanted in her neck and, she has lost the one man she ever truly loved, Grant. But, there is no give in or give up in Rayvin and at every turn she does her best to combat de Sade and his evil minions.

de Sade: still the Big Bad and still bat-sh*t crazy with delusions of grandeur thrown in for funsies. de Sade is convinced he can sire a master race of hybrid vampire/witches and through them, he will rule the world. For the first time in his more than 300 years of “life” de Sade is making progress toward his ultimate goal. Though Charlotte is his ideal mate de Sade has settled for Rayvin. He is convincingly crazy, determined to the point of blindness and, indiscriminately cruel.

Siobhan: a GARGOYLE!!!!! Tori L. Ridgewood, you gave me a GARGOYLE!!!! Siobhan is badass, she is totally dedicated to Marcy and, she is wicked awesome in a fight. In her human form she is slight, sexy and totally consumed with her appearance. When she transforms she is tons of fun and she can fly. Though Siobhan seems a bit flighty (HA!) she is just as dedicated as Marcy to taking down de Sade.

Solomon: a snarky recluse who also happens to be an extremely accomplished wolf. Solomon is responsible for training Grant and though he is quite hesitant to leave his home he is also committed to helping Grant and his daughter. Not gonna give that secret away 🙂

As you might have guessed this ragtag group of humans, witches and supernatural eventually come together to put a serious whoop ass on de Sade and his gang of evil undead. The plan is beyond crazy and by the time everyone comes together they are facing more than just de Sade. Jason is on the rise and his army is bound and determined to please him and when the smoke finally clears not everyone is still standing and the allegiances that have been formed had my head spinning.

The Bottom Line: I am so damn pleased with this read! Blood and Fire shows no signs of slowing down and Tori L. Ridgewood has come to play!! This book starts off fast and doesn’t let up until the very end. New and exciting characters are introduced, the older characters are believably evolving and, the plot is thickening with each turn of the virtual page. Loyalties are tested and strengthened, love is challenged and, the strength (both emotional and physical) of all is put to the ultimate test. Ridgewood is a polished writer who puts out well-written, finely edited books that have a tendency to just drag you right on in and not let you go until the very end. I promise you, you won’t care about being sucked in and will probably be pissy about the end of the read 🙂 I am putting it out there right now, The Talbot Trilogy is shaping up to be one of my all-time favorites and something I feel comfortable labelling as a highly recommended read.

About the author and where to find her:

author - Tori L. RidgewoodAfter her first heartbreak, Tori found solace in two things: reading romance novels and listening to an after-dark radio program called Lovers and Other Strangers. Throughout the summer and fall of 1990, the new kid in town found reading fiction and writing her own short stories gave her a much needed creative outlet. Determined to become a published author, Tori amassed stacks of notebooks and boxes of filed-away stories, most only half-finished before another idea would overtake her and demand to be written down. Then, while on parental leave with her second baby, one story formed and refused to be packed away. Between teaching full-time, parenting, and life in general, it would take almost seven years before the first novel in her first trilogy would be completed. In the process, Tori finally found her stride as a writer.

At present, on her off-time, Tori not only enjoys reading, but also listening to an eclectic mix of music as she walks the family dog (Skittles), attempts to turn her thumb green, or makes needlework gifts for her friends and family members. She loves to travel, collect and make miniature furniture, and a good cup of tea during a thunderstorm or a blizzard. Under it all, she is always intrigued by history, the supernatural, vampire and shapeshifter mythology, romance, and other dangers.

Series Synopsis:

Objection: Volume 1 in the Legal Affairs Serial Romance
One year ago, I graduated from law school and embarked on a career as a purveyor of high priced legal shenanigans.  Six months ago, my boyfriend dumped me when I thought he might be proposing.  Two weeks ago, I got drunk and joined a secret sex club.
Two days ago, I had a torrid one-night stand with a stranger.  Today? Well, today I’m contemplating having an affair with my boss.
Matt Connover is all kinds of forbidden temptation wrapped up in a deliciously wicked package, and he’s made it clear… he’s only interested in sex.  My name is McKayla Dawson but everyone calls me Mac. I work at the powerhouse firm of Connover & Crown, LLP, where the law has never felt so hot.  But between you and me, I’m afraid my heart won’t survive these Legal Affairs.

Stipulation: Volume 2 in the Legal Affairs Serial Romance

I crossed a line with my boss and there’s no taking it back.  Not that I’d want to.  You see… Matt Connover? Well, he’s something else. Strong, magnetic, sexy as hell… but yeah, he’s still my boss.  What am I doing? Why is he so irresistible to me?  Maybe it’s because I finally saw a different side to him. I saw, for a brief moment, that Matt is vulnerable, possibly damaged. Is it wrong that it makes him even sexier in my opinion?  I’m in deep and I don’t see any way out.  I don’t want to find a way out.  I want to find a way for both of us to stay involved in these Legal Affairs.

Violation: Volume 3 in the Legal Affairs Serial Romance

My life is in a tail-spin and I’m about ready to crash.  I’ve cut Matt Connover out of my life… well, at least out of my bedroom.
But I still have to deal with him at work. I have Lorraine intent on raining hell and destruction down upon me, which at least provides a nice diversion from my miserable feelings over Matt.  About the only good thing that has happened to me lately?  Cal Carson asked me out… and I accepted.  Matt’s not going to like that. Not one little bit.  But that’s not my problem now, is it?

Mitigation: Volume 4 in the Legal Affairs Serial Romance

I’ve seen a new side to Matt Connover. He’s proven to me that there is something inside him other than icy control and masculine force.  I’ve seen care… tenderness… even protectiveness.  I’ve seen vulnerability.  But Matt Connover’s issues run deep. I know Cal hurt him greatly, and he keeps himself protected because of that. I also sense there is something more to his pain that even I cannot comprehend.
Matt is struggling between what he knows and what he wants.  I’m struggling with boundaries and how to protect my own fragile heart.  This time I’m drawing a line in the sand and Matt can either step over to join me, or these Legal Affairs are finished forever.

Reparation: Volume 5 in the Legal Affairs Serial Romance

Matt Connover is like a new person. Caring, romantic and thoughtful. No worries though… he’s still sexy as hell.  He has changed in every way that I have ever dreamed of, and he did it because he wants me. It’s like a fairy tale of sorts.  Except… like with every fairy tale, there is a villain. One who threatens to disrupt the harmony we have created together.  Is what we have strong enough to survive? I truly believe that perhaps I can find love within these Legal Affairs. I’m just not sure Matt believes it.

Affirmation: Volume 6 in the Legal Affairs Serial Romance

Things are off, and I can’t quite put my finger on it. Some things, however, are the same. For example, the sex with Matt is just as nuclear and consistent as it always has been.  Still… I feel like I’m holding onto Matt with my fingertips, like he’s on the verge of slipping away and I don’t know what to do.   When I started these Legal Affairs, I had no way of knowing the depth of feeling that would become involved. I had no way of knowing this man could shatter my existence.   I don’t want to be hurt, so I’m grasping hard and I can only hope that he wants me enough to hang on just as tight.

Rating: 3½/5 for the overall series

My Review:

**Note: this review is for the series as a whole.**

I fully admit to loving Objection, the first installment of this series but after reading the other five installments, I found myself completely disillusioned.  In the beginning I was much taken with Matt’s take-charge attitude and Mac’s total defense of herself in the face of Matt’s asshatery.  Their sexual encounters are crazy hot but I quickly figured out that the sex is really all Matt and Mac have going for them.  As we see in installment one, Matt has all kinds of issues with Mac and relationships outside of the bedroom.  Matt is all about the physical and he has no problem reminding himself and Mac repeatedly and quite harshly that there is nothing to them beyond the sex.  Though Mac is constantly hurt by these reminders and Matt’s general attitude toward her outside of the bedroom, she absolutely believes there is more to him and that she is the woman who can change him.

As the series wears on, Mac and Matt fall into a routine that involves Matt being an a**hole, Mac wanting more than just sex, Matt being an even bigger a**hole when Mac tries to talk to him and, Mac inevitably snapping the tether and severing all ties with Matt.  True to form, Mac mopes and Matt treats absolutely everyone around him like crap when the two are no longer having sex.  Every single time Mac finally gets to the point where she thinks she can go on without Matt and his orgasm-inducing awesomeness, Matt does something moderately nice and sucks her right back into his cruel and controlling world.  Mac sees the moderately nice act as a sign of Matt changing and dives right back in all full of hope and enthusiasm.  Very early on, Matt figures out that Mac is incapable of resisting him and he controls her through sex thus creating a toxic relationship that is no way equal or fair.

To be fair, there is a lot in Matt’s background that has caused him to behave the way he does and Bennett does a fine job of explaining that background.  For me, both the explanation for Matt’s behavior and the change that eventually happens is quite simply too little and far, far too late.  The things he says and does to Mac are cruel and beyond unkind and in many ways, inexcusable.  Every person has a choice about how they treat others and Matt simply chooses incorrectly nearly every time he has an encounter with Mac.  Worse, Mac allows it to happen, repeatedly.

The Bottom Line: Understand this, I have no problem with this author and will absolutely read more of her books.  Furthermore, I cannot complain about the writing style or the editing of this series as both were quite fine and professionally managed.  As a fan of character-driven reads, my complaint with this series lies solely with the characters.  I just can’t root for Matt or in any way have any hope of happiness for him.  At some point, even fictional characters have to stop blaming their past and blaming others for their deplorable behavior and start making better choices.  I get that this happens in this series but not before I am completely turned off by Matt and hoping for bad and nasty things to happen to him.  Worse is Mac, a capable and competent woman in her work life who allows Matt to treat her like a whore.  For Mac, Matt is a drug and like an addict, Mac can’t shake her nasty and awful habit.  Mac chases the next high always hoping it will turn out differently this time around.  By the end of the read, I had very, very little respect for Mac and that made me both angry and sad.  At the end of the day, this is a series that has become wildly popular and I in no way judge those who love it and have favorably reviewed it.  As we are all entitled to our own opinion, I found the Legal Affairs series to be a series that just isn’t for me.
