Time has never been an issue for Baxter Jacobs, but then she never knew she had the ability to Bend it.  As her sixteenth birthday approaches, Baxter inherits a pendant that will change her life. Connected to the pendant is a dark and mysterious young man named Declan Ashdown. Trapped in a Time loop for the past 122 years, Declan needs Baxter’s help to escape. The only problem is, she has no idea how to do it.  To acquire the power she needs to free him, she’ll become one of the Interred, those whose Magical abilities emerge as they come of age. When she does, she’ll discover that Declan isn’t the only one interested in the fact that she’s a Time Bender.  As the Interment arrives, Baxter knows this will be no Sweet Sixteen. A vengeful relative and ruthless Council are determined to control her. Declan’s powerful and charming descendant, Jack Ashdown, claims he can save her. She’ll soon have to decide who she can trust, and how to master her new abilities before Time runs out.

My Review:

The eve of every kid’s sixteenth birthday should be a magical time; there should be nerves about driving solo, excitement over the party and, no cares in the world.  Never should a kid on the cusp of such a huge milestone have to be worried about being buried alive and hoping her magical powers will be enough to get her out alive.  Yeah, no one should have that crap on their agenda.  J

Baxter is a different sort of 16-year-old.  Though she didn’t know it until her mother could no longer hide the truth, Baxter is a magical being from a long, long line of magical beings and she has the very unique and coveted ability of Time Bending.  She also has a ghost by the name of Declan who is at once hateful, snide, sad, funny, caring and, completely untrustworthy.  After being forced to spill the beans about her daughter’s abilities and what comes next, the family packs up and moves to England so Baxter can participate in the Interment – a magical beings rite of passage that every 16-year-old must go through.  Essentially, Baxter’s powers will manifest on the night of her 16th birthday and she will be able to work her way out of the coffin with Declan’s (yeah, the untrustworthy one) guidance and her newfound powers.  According to everyone, including her lying, deceiving mother the Internment has gone off without a hitch for centuries and Baxter’s will do so as well.

If things were as simple as being buried alive and getting out, Baxter would have no worries at all.  Things just aren’t that simple and here’s her list of worries: Declan wants something from Baxter that no one else has ever been able to accomplish, her mother hid not just her powers but an entire family and history from her, as a Time Bender, Baxter is assigned a Healer and hers happens to be way too cute for words and from a rival family, her power is highly coveted and, she is about to be buried alive.  I really can’t get past that whole buried alive bit, can I?  As you might well expect, the night of the Interment is anything but smooth and in fact, all hell breaks loose.  Baxter’s powers are put to the ultimate test, her level of loyalty and trustworthiness is tested beyond reason and, she is forced to act in ways she never thought possible just to stay alive.

The Bottom Line: Holy cats what an intense and exciting read!!  Though Interred starts out a bit slowly and does have some slow parts throughout, the action and plot are super intense and the slow moments sort of give everyone – characters and reader alike – a moment to breathe and regroup.  There is a lot of information in this read and I often found myself feeling a bit like Baxter, completely overwhelmed by everything but willing to go with the flow.  Baxter is the strength of this read and with everything she goes through and has thrown at her, it is often hard to remember that she is just sixteen.  The magical world, the abilities of the magical beings and, the crazy twists and turns in the plot made this read not only fascinating but entirely enjoyable.

Baxter Jacobs just survived the worst Sweet Sixteen in history: buried in a coffin, hunted down by assassins, and losing almost everything that mattered to her. She’s ready for some normalcy, but “normal” won’t play any part of this Time Bender’s future.  Now that the immediate threat is over, Baxter learns just how much the English Council expects of the newest Interred. The pressure has her seriously considering her uncle’s offer to take her to New York, especially since she thinks it will keep her Healer, Jack, from overusing his abilities. Knowing the New York Council’s ranks are filled with beings using dark powers, however, makes her hesitate.  Before she can choose, the decision is wrenched from her. Fissures in Time result in a new battle with an old enemy. Someone she thought she’d lost reenters her life, and she’ll discover a web of lies woven into the fabric of Time…lies only she can unravel. Baxter will have to use her growing abilities to try and reveal the truth, even if it forever changes the reality she knows.

My Review:

**Contains spoilers for book one, Interred**

Fissure, round two of the Chronicles of the Interred opens dramatically and just shortly after the ending of Interred.  The dramatic, decisive and, seriously ugly battle at the end of Interred has left Baxter with chunks of her memory completely gone, her healer, Jack in the hospital fighting for his life, her family dead and, a growing sense of distrust regarding everyone in her life.  Additionally, Baxter is still trying to come to terms with the fact that she is THE time bender, the one everyone wants to control, protect or kill.  Finally, there is the small matter of Baxter’s powers growing almost exponentially.

In an effort to save herself and those she cares for, Baxter has done a considerable amount of time travelling and the consequences of those actions are starting to appear.  With little to guide her, Baxter has relied on her instincts and a few close and trusted friends to help her make decisions; decisions that have altered not just the past but the present and future as well.  The world is a mess and the remaining members of the English Council are doing all they can to protect Baxter and her powers.  Chaffing at the confinement and her lack of ability to help, Baxter begins to hatch plans that will right the wrongs of both the past and the present.  To do so, she will need every bit of her strength and an expanded willingness to trust.  As with Interred, Fissure is packed full of information, events and, characters.  In fact, this character-driven read is so packed with faces – new and old – that I had to make myself a list.  Here’s the skinny, in alphabetical order:

Aaron: an incredibly powerful Time Bender whose two missions in life (and other lives) include protecting Baxter and killing every incarnation of Declan.

Andrew: Baxter’s dad who is ALIVE and well and living in 1974.  Andrew is a powerful being with time bending (wait till you find out how he got those powers!), absorbing and, necromancer powers.

Annabel:  one seriously bad-a*& chick; she is Moira’s daughter, Jack’s half-sister, Nicholas’s girlfriend and the only female Warrior.

Bryan: Baxter’s uncle and brother to Andrew; there is truly nothing in the world I can say about this character that is even remotely close to nice.  You’ll hate him too, don’t worry J

Dare: Sister to Zachary and long-time friend to Baxter though Baxter cannot recall their friendship; Dare is fierce and loyal with some awesome Elemental abilities.  She is Xavier’s girlfriend.

Declan: Yes, that rat bastard is still around and his intentions are less than honorable in every timeline he is a part of.

Jack: Baxter’s healer and boyfriend depending on the timeline.  Jack’s a Warrior with a fierce loyalty to Baxter; he is the half sibling of Annabel and like her, always willing to put his life on the line.

Nicolas: a French Warrior assigned to be Baxter’s guardian in the absence of her parents.  He is Annabel’s boyfriend and once all Hell breaks loose, sides with the English Council and never abandons his post as Baxter’s guardian.

Xavier: a Lycan with some seriously cool Elemental powers; boyfriend to Dare.

Zachary: brother to Dare and Baxter’s boyfriend depending on the timeline.  Zachary is likely a true blue character but some of his actions are a bit sketchy.

To say that the cast of characters is extensive doesn’t really come close.  The above list is partial and necessary since many of the characters appear in multiple timelines and as older and/or younger versions of themselves.  This is a strong cast but with so many people in so many places and times, I often found it difficult to keep track of everyone.  Additionally, there is a ton of action in this read: portals are constantly being opened and characters being sucked in, characters are dying (or not!), Baxter is constantly taking in new information about the past, present and future and, everything is changing at every turn of the page.

The Bottom Line: While I still certainly enjoyed this read I also found it a bit frustrating.  I’m a pretty astute reader and can follow a lot of wonkiness but there is just so much going on in this read with so many different people and events that I found myself somewhat frustrated.  Keeping track of the constantly shifting plans due to new information gathered from older/younger characters in various timelines became tedious at some point and I found myself having to slow down, re-read and shift through a lot of information to be sure I understood.  Does this mean I am done with this series?  Hell no!!  I am drawn to character-driven reads and this series is certainly that but, I do sincerely hope that some of the things that frustrated me with this read will be resolved in later reads.
