My Rating: 5/5 stars

My Review:

Jack Lennox is tired of travelling, fighting and generally being unsettled.  He is ready to claim his inheritance and with any luck at all, settle down on his family’s estate (Pinchbeck Hall) and find a partner to share a calm and quiet life with.  To date, Jack has led both a horrible life as a kid with his father and a rather exciting and dangerous life as an adult and a spy.  He is single, handsome and, has a legitimate claim to the title, Earl of Storr.  The only real impediment to his claim is the presence of the dowager Countess of Storr, Mary Lennox and her brother, Simon.  In an effort to fully assess the situation, Jack travels to Pinchbeck Hall in the guise of Mr. John Smith, secretary to the Honorable Earl of Storr, Jack Lennox.

Mary Lennox and her brother, Simon are absolutely willing to go to any and all lengths to secure their claim on Pinchbeck Hall.  Mary, married to the late Earl of Storr is pregnant and should she deliver a son, her son will inherit the title and secure his mother’s future.  So why then is Mary so nervous when John Smith (aka Jack Lennox) appears on the front steps of Pinchbeck Hall?  Simon is even more nervous than his sister and quite angry at the presumption that anyone other than his sister should occupy Pinchbeck Hall.  From the very moment he meets the two, Jack is convinced there is far more to the story than meets the eye.  At the insistence of both Mary and Simon, Jack agrees to stay at Pinchbeck while he conducts his research.  It doesn’t take long for Jack to figure out just how far the two are willing to go to secure their respective futures.  Seduction is on the menu and it doesn’t just come from the dowager 🙂

Jack’s time at Pinchbeck Hall is enlightening, entertaining, sexually stimulating and, confusing.  His relationships with Mary and Simon (together and separately) take a multitude of twists and turns and it seems everyone involved has a secret they desperately want to keep.   Jack’s contacts in London are constantly finding out new information about the Dowager and her brother which causes Jack’s opinion about them to shift frequently.  He is intrigued by both and before long realizes he doesn’t want to see anyone hurt, least of all Mary.  No one, including Jack saw this one coming.

The Bottom Line: Kate Pearce’s The Sinners Club took me completely by surprise at nearly every turn.  I immediately fell for Jack Lennox and rooted for him from beginning to end.  Jack is a complex and interesting character that evolved throughout the read and kept me wholly involved in his story.  The plot is fascinating with claims to titles, secrets, some seriously naughty sexcapades and, characters that are at once despicable and likeable.  Except Jack, he’s always likeable 🙂 The Sinners Club (the actual location and the book!) is completely fascinating and thoroughly enjoyable read.  I heartily recommend this read to all 18+ (sexual situations!!) readers who enjoy period pieces, sexual naughtiness, finely written and interesting characters and, lovers of light mystery.

Synopsis:

Warning — Explicit language and red-hot multiple partner sex scenes suitable only for adults. Includes oral sex, anal sex, and light bondage and spanking.

Jasmine and her fellow book clubbers grow disgruntled that characters in spicy novels live larger than they do. They want what their latest fictional heroine got — a seriously sizzling encounter with a gang of hot, lusty men. Deciding it’s time to make their own racy daydreams come true, they form the Fantasy Guild.  Jasmine volunteers to be the test case and sets out to find the perfect players who will bring her erotic, high-stakes poker game to life. It’s a tantalizing first for Jasmine, and five hard-bodied men guarantee it’ll be a night to remember. She’s only the beginning. Up next, Pamela seeks an afternoon of poolside delight with some smokin’ younger hired hands. Lastly, Freya turns spy and is captured by five sexy interrogators who won’t rest until they’ve tortured every single piece of intel from Freya’s helpless person.  All the ladies agree — the Fantasy Guild is off to a dazzling start!

My Ratings and Quick Thoughts:

This read started out quite well with the backstory about how the Fantasy Guild comes to be and Jasmine’s willingness to test the group sex waters.  Jasmine is strong and courageous and more than willing to give her fantasies free reign.  Her night with the boys is WOW hot and her bravery leads to other women in the group to step up to play.  Pamela’s story is a little less hot as it is bound up in her issues over her ex.  Her fantasy is pretty vanilla but the boys are gorgeous, the sex is fierce and, Pamela comes away from the encounter with more confidence and sexual freedom.  Last up in the set is Freya, a young, quiet woman with a passion for spies and an intense desire to experiment.  Her night with the boys is based on her love of spy novels and an interest in light bondage.  As with Pamela’s story, this read went downhill just a bit and I found myself skipping over large chunks of information.  Overall, Jasmine’s story is a solid 4/5 stars, Pamela’s story is 3½/5 stars and, Freya’s story is 3/5 stars.

Power Play Novella Series by Selena Kitt

In general, I liked this series and though each title is listed in a particular order, I read the series out of order and had no issues.  Of the seven novellas, I have read six (I can’t get one of them from Amazon right now – BOO!) and found each to be a unique story with generally likeable characters and a very light plot that is crafted for one thing and one thing only, to get to the sex.  The sex is not particularly dirty nor does it cross any real comfort boundaries for me (OK, maybe the priest does but that’s just because he’s a priest :)) and will certainly keep the mild erotica reader entertained.   And so, without further ado, here’s the reading order for Selena Kitt’s Power Play series:

Novella #1: Kelsey and the Executive: 3½/5 stars

13629022Kelsey never dreamed her first job out of college with her bachelor’s degree in hand would be as a secretary. Still, she’s grateful to have any job at all, with the economy at a standstill, and she consoles herself that she is, after all, an “executive” secretary to one of the most powerful men in the country. Oliver Pierce turns out to be a harsh taskmaster, and while her friends wonder how Kelsey got the job at all, with such a thin resume, Kelsey doesn’t have to wonder. It becomes quite clear very quickly that her lack of experience is exactly what Oliver Pierce was looking for, and she finds herself utterly seduced, happy to be his perfect blank slate, ready to be shaped and molded and made completely his.

 Synopsis:

It all started as one big misunderstanding. Jessie Sawyer’s boyfriend, Devin, gave her a key to his apartment and she merely wanted to thank him in a jazzy, make-your-wet-dreams-come-true kind of way. She had no idea his roommate, Conner, would come home so early and catch her posing in her new lingerie…with her hand between her legs. But what begins as one huge, mortifying experience soon turns into the most memorable, pleasurable night of her life when Devin finally shows up and neither man wants her to leave.

My Rating and Quick Thoughts:

Woosh!!  This naughty novella is an easy 5-star read for me and I have already read it more than once.  😉  Jessie just wants to do something really special for her boyfriend, Devin and for their anniversary but it somehow goes awkwardly wrong and she is “caught” by her boyfriend’s roommate, Conner instead of Devin.  As if things couldn’t get any more embarrassing, Conner returns the naughty favor thus forcing Jessie to admit she has a serious attraction to both men and not just Devin.  What I particularly enjoyed about this read is the acceptance of all involved – there is no forcing, no coercion just three consenting adults exploring an exciting and steamy night together.  I also very much like the contrast between Devin and Conner and even with their differences are still very caring and concerned about Jessie, her comfort and, her pleasure.  In all, a fine bit of erotica with a good blend of story, characters and, naughty bits.

 My Rating and Quick Thoughts:

I liked this read and can comfortably give it 3½ to 4/5 stars but I can’t say it is going to fly to the top of my list of reads that come  to mind when I have a hankering for erotica.  Other than the narrator’s voice feeling a bit awkward at times, I can’t say there is anything particularly wrong with this read, it just didn’t blow my skirt up like other reads have.  The characters are OK the sex is steamy and the tiniest bit inventive and there is always, as the title implies an article of clothing from J’s closet involved.  In all, an OK read but if you have make a decision between spending your pennies on this read or another, go with the other read.   To be completely fair and honest, I am not done with this author and will likely be giving another one of his reads a try just as a point of comparison.

With Saint’s scars so deep and Drew’s so fresh, can the pair heal from their painful wounds or will they be pulled beneath the darkness of their pasts?

Five Favorite Quotes from Pulled Beneath by Marni Mann

“I had witnessed his pain in motion; the way he had stroked over the sea fueled by something so similar to what fueled me. The agony he couldn’t hide from his caramel-colored eyes. I was drawn to whatever was broken in him, probably in the same way he was drawn to what was broken in me.” -Drew

“There was a time in my life – not too long ago – when I was trapped. Pulled beneath the waves, into the hole I had climbed into. It was a dark, damaging place. That ink reminds me of how I never want to visit there again.” –Saint

Marni: I think we can all relate to a time like this. Not everyone resurfaces, but those who do usually have mental or physical battle scars. Saint’s are tattoos.

“Knowing the freedom that was waiting for me in the water, I hadn’t taken the time to grab my goggles or a cap. Freedom from my thoughts, moments that weren’t disrupted by the snapshots of my parents…their blood pooled on the floor…their lifeless bodies heaped in the positions they’d fallen in. With each exhale, their blood seemed to slowly evaporate, their bodies began to lift, their skin turned pink. Time reversed.  With this pause came an increased heart rate, burning muscles. I purged my emotions, emptied them into the ocean. In a place where I felt – and could be – truly weightless.” –Drew

Marni: Swimming is Drew’s drug. It’s when she’s most vulnerable. I appreciate her honesty in this.

“Something passed between us, more than just an understanding…more than just the heat of our hands on each other. It was possibility. A chance to see what would happen without the heavy expectations that came with a promise. It was the place where we needed to start: At the beginning.” -Drew

Marni: I love when two characters are so connected that they don’t always need words to describe their feelings. Expressions, gestures, the softest kiss, is often enough. This is one of those times.

My Rating: 4½/5 stars

My Review:

The eve of every kid’s sixteenth birthday should be a magical time; there should be nerves about driving solo, excitement over the party and, no cares in the world.  Never should a kid on the cusp of such a huge milestone have to be worried about being buried alive and hoping her magical powers will be enough to get her out alive.  Yeah, no one should have that crap on their agenda.  J

Baxter is a different sort of 16-year-old.  Though she didn’t know it until her mother could no longer hide the truth, Baxter is a magical being from a long, long line of magical beings and she has the very unique and coveted ability of Time Bending.  She also has a ghost by the name of Declan who is at once hateful, snide, sad, funny, caring and, completely untrustworthy.  After being forced to spill the beans about her daughter’s abilities and what comes next, the family packs up and moves to England so Baxter can participate in the Interment – a magical beings rite of passage that every 16-year-old must go through.  Essentially, Baxter’s powers will manifest on the night of her 16th birthday and she will be able to work her way out of the coffin with Declan’s (yeah, the untrustworthy one) guidance and her newfound powers.  According to everyone, including her lying, deceiving mother the Internment has gone off without a hitch for centuries and Baxter’s will do so as well.

If things were as simple as being buried alive and getting out, Baxter would have no worries at all.  Things just aren’t that simple and here’s her list of worries: Declan wants something from Baxter that no one else has ever been able to accomplish, her mother hid not just her powers but an entire family and history from her, as a Time Bender, Baxter is assigned a Healer and hers happens to be way too cute for words and from a rival family, her power is highly coveted and, she is about to be buried alive.  I really can’t get past that whole buried alive bit, can I?  As you might well expect, the night of the Interment is anything but smooth and in fact, all hell breaks loose.  Baxter’s powers are put to the ultimate test, her level of loyalty and trustworthiness is tested beyond reason and, she is forced to act in ways she never thought possible just to stay alive.

The Bottom Line: Holy cats what an intense and exciting read!!  Though Interred starts out a bit slowly and does have some slow parts throughout, the action and plot are super intense and the slow moments sort of give everyone – characters and reader alike – a moment to breathe and regroup.  There is a lot of information in this read and I often found myself feeling a bit like Baxter, completely overwhelmed by everything but willing to go with the flow.  Baxter is the strength of this read and with everything she goes through and has thrown at her, it is often hard to remember that she is just sixteen.  The magical world, the abilities of the magical beings and, the crazy twists and turns in the plot made this read not only fascinating but entirely enjoyable.

She’s ready for some normalcy, but “normal” won’t play any part of this Time Bender’s future.  Now that the immediate threat is over, Baxter learns just how much the English Council expects of the newest Interred. The pressure has her seriously considering her uncle’s offer to take her to New York, especially since she thinks it will keep her Healer, Jack, from overusing his abilities. Fissures in Time result in a new battle with an old enemy. Someone she thought she’d lost reenters her life, and she’ll discover a web of lies woven into the fabric of Time…lies only she can unravel. My Rating: 4/5 stars

My Review:

**Contains spoilers for book one, Interred**

Fissure, round two of the Chronicles of the Interred opens dramatically and just shortly after the ending of Interred.  The dramatic, decisive and, seriously ugly battle at the end of Interred has left Baxter with chunks of her memory completely gone, her healer, Jack in the hospital fighting for his life, her family dead and, a growing sense of distrust regarding everyone in her life.  Additionally, Baxter is still trying to come to terms with the fact that she is THE time bender, the one everyone wants to control, protect or kill.  Finally, there is the small matter of Baxter’s powers growing almost exponentially.

In an effort to save herself and those she cares for, Baxter has done a considerable amount of time travelling and the consequences of those actions are starting to appear.  With little to guide her, Baxter has relied on her instincts and a few close and trusted friends to help her make decisions; decisions that have altered not just the past but the present and future as well.  The world is a mess and the remaining members of the English Council are doing all they can to protect Baxter and her powers.  Chaffing at the confinement and her lack of ability to help, Baxter begins to hatch plans that will right the wrongs of both the past and the present.  To do so, she will need every bit of her strength and an expanded willingness to trust.  As with Interred, Fissure is packed full of information, events and, characters.  In fact, this character-driven read is so packed with faces – new and old – that I had to make myself a list.  Here’s the skinny, in alphabetical order:

Aaron: an incredibly powerful Time Bender whose two missions in life (and other lives) include protecting Baxter and killing every incarnation of Declan.

Andrew: Baxter’s dad who is ALIVE and well and living in 1974.  Andrew is a powerful being with time bending (wait till you find out how he got those powers!), absorbing and, necromancer powers.

Annabel:  one seriously bad-a*& chick; she is Moira’s daughter, Jack’s half-sister, Nicholas’s girlfriend and the only female Warrior.

Bryan: Baxter’s uncle and brother to Andrew; there is truly nothing in the world I can say about this character that is even remotely close to nice.  You’ll hate him too, don’t worry J

Dare: Sister to Zachary and long-time friend to Baxter though Baxter cannot recall their friendship; Dare is fierce and loyal with some awesome Elemental abilities.  She is Xavier’s girlfriend.

Declan: Yes, that rat bastard is still around and his intentions are less than honorable in every timeline he is a part of.

Jack: Baxter’s healer and boyfriend depending on the timeline.  Jack’s a Warrior with a fierce loyalty to Baxter; he is the half sibling of Annabel and like her, always willing to put his life on the line.

Nicolas: a French Warrior assigned to be Baxter’s guardian in the absence of her parents.  He is Annabel’s boyfriend and once all Hell breaks loose, sides with the English Council and never abandons his post as Baxter’s guardian.

Xavier: a Lycan with some seriously cool Elemental powers; boyfriend to Dare.

Zachary: brother to Dare and Baxter’s boyfriend depending on the timeline.  Zachary is likely a true blue character but some of his actions are a bit sketchy.

To say that the cast of characters is extensive doesn’t really come close.  The above list is partial and necessary since many of the characters appear in multiple timelines and as older and/or younger versions of themselves.  This is a strong cast but with so many people in so many places and times, I often found it difficult to keep track of everyone.  Additionally, there is a ton of action in this read: portals are constantly being opened and characters being sucked in, characters are dying (or not!), Baxter is constantly taking in new information about the past, present and future and, everything is changing at every turn of the page.

The Bottom Line: While I still certainly enjoyed this read I also found it a bit frustrating.  I’m a pretty astute reader and can follow a lot of wonkiness but there is just so much going on in this read with so many different people and events that I found myself somewhat frustrated.  Keeping track of the constantly shifting plans due to new information gathered from older/younger characters in various timelines became tedious at some point and I found myself having to slow down, re-read and shift through a lot of information to be sure I understood.  Does this mean I am done with this series?  Hell no!!  I am drawn to character-driven reads and this series is certainly that but, I do sincerely hope that some of the things that frustrated me with this read will be resolved in later reads.

Synopsis:

A companion novella to Groomed for Murder Going to the Dogs, #2. Your reading enjoyment would be enhanced if you’ve already read Groomed for Murder.

Brooke and Drew are getting married and Brooke is happy juggling all her responsibilities with her wonderful fiancé, Drew and her playful Bulldog, Boxer. She’s in her element running both Pawlish, her doggie grooming spa and Bone Appétit, her dog treat franchise.  But, even though Drew hasn’t been demanding, he’s unhappy. Whenever he brings up slowing down, she reassures him she can handle everything. But the reality is that she isn’t and their relationship is suffering. It isn’t until the honeymoon that things come to a head. Brooke is spending more time putting out fires with her businesses than she is quenching her new husband’s fire.

Will her need to handle everything cause her to lose…the only thing that matters?

My Rating: 5/5 stars

My Review:

I feel like all I need to say about this read is “Drew!” and I am done but alas, that just wouldn’t be enough.  🙂  I don’t think I realized until I plowed through Handled how much I love Drew and how much I was looking forward to the conclusion of his story.  Sure, Brooke is in there too and I was glad to read more about her but for me, this one is all about the boy!!

As we have come to expect, Brooke is in way over her head trying to complete tasks, chores and, projects for her two businesses, her friends and, her own wedding.  While Brooke has always been highly efficient and completely capable, she has also generally been on her own so the long, hard hours only mattered to her.  Since Drew has come into her life Brooke has seen great improvement overall but, the hours aren’t lessening and though she assures Drew that she has everything covered and things will slow down after the wedding, his patience is beginning to wear thin.  With no regrets, Drew gave up his high-powered, high-income job for something far more meaningful and far less time-consuming.  Drew’s time with Brooke is precious and though he makes every effort to spend time with her, he is getting pretty tired of being stood up.  Their sex life is bleh and bordering on non-existent and there is just only so much a man can take before he crosses the unthinkable line.

The Bottom Line:  After spending so much time with the same group of characters I would totally expect both the author and the reader to be tired of the lot of them.  That is not the case at all with this series for either me or Zoe Dawson.  Dawson keeps her characters fresh and exciting (something an author bored with his/her characters cannot do!) and is totally unafraid of throwing a ton of drama at her characters.  Dawson writes strong characters who are able to stick to their guns, be strong and, weather all storms.  For me, I love these characters (DREW!!) and am especially glad to see them facing and overcoming adversity – the mark of truly evolving characters.  I know the end is near for this original group of characters and I have to say, I will be sorry to see them take a back seat to the next group of characters.  This series just doesn’t get old and is one I can truly see myself going to back to again and again 🙂
