Long live the King… After turning his back on the throne for centuries, Wrath, son of Wrath, finally assumed his father’s mantle–with the help of his beloved mate. But the crown sets heavily on his head. As the war with the Lessening Society rages on, and the threat from the Band of Bastards truly hits home, he is forced to make choices that put everything–and everyone–at risk. Beth Randall thought she knew what she was getting into when she mated the last pure blooded vampire on the planet: An easy ride was not it. But when she decides she wants a child, she’s unprepared for Wrath’s response–or the distance it creates between them. The question is, will true love win out… or tortured legacy take over?

My Review:

**contains spoilers and a rant**

The day I have long feared has finally come to pass; today is the day I have to admit that I didn’t absolutely, head over heels love a Black Dagger Brotherhood novel. Yes, dear reader, this makes me one very, very sad panda 😦

I have long supported the BDB series and with the exception of Phury’s book (he’s a serious whiner!) I have loved each and every read. The characters are rich and full-bodied, the plot lines – both short- and long-term – have remained fresh and exciting and the dialogue and naughty bits have always kept me well entertained. So, why then, does The King, a book that should be phenomenal fall flat? Plainly put, the plot is seriously lacking.

This installment I found to be only marginally interesting at best. There is a lot of rehashing going on in this read and quite frankly, I am getting a bit tired of it. Yes, we know Wrath hates being King; yes, we know Trez and iAm are up to their butts in trouble with their people; yes, we know Beth wants a baby; yes, we know the Glymera hate Wrath and his kind and want them gone; yes, we know Assail has a serious crush on Sola and he is addicted to drugs and; yes, we know WHO John Matthew is so just spit it out already and stop dragging out the damn drama. I am not suggesting the entire read is a rehashing of old events but a large portion is and the rehashing isn’t balanced out by new material. Quite simply, I feel like I have already read a large portion of this book in previous installments. Continuing with this line of thought is my frustration over the lack of any long-term plot and/or character development. It’s more than time to move forward with some of the smaller plot lines so do it! Finally, I found the ending to be completely lame and a total waste. Are you kidding me? After decades (centuries!!) of hating Wrath and wanting to take his throne, Xcor just quits and with a bunch of falsely created documents and a single vote, centuries of vampiric traditions are gone, wiped away?? This ending felt like a cop out to me; as if, there were only X number of pages available for text and once Ward got near that limit she just threw together something quick and easy that is far, far, far from satisfying.

Now that I got that out of the way! There are some things about this read that I did truly enjoy. For example, Trez and Boo the cat are so endearing; Sola’s totally oblivious grandmother cooking and caring for two hardened and stone-cold killer vampires is pretty awesome; the story of Wrath’s parents is nice to FINALLY know and; Wrath stepping up and finally becoming a true and proper king to his people is heartwarming. Unfortunately, these things are such a small part of the read as to be almost insignificant and that is also extremely frustrating.

The Bottom Line: I am trying to figure out why it took a year to get this book completed and on the market. With the incredible amount of rehashing and small amount of evolution, this could have been done and ready for readers a lot sooner. Am I done with the BDB? No, not quite yet but the next book is the make it or break it read for me. Should the next installment in the series be as inadequate as The King then I will I have to say goodbye to a series that I have dearly loved for many, many years and that too makes me a very sad panda.

Excerpt and Sweepstakes: Drake Restrained (Book #0.5: The Unrestrained Series) by S.E. Lund

Book #0.5: Drake Restrained

Drake Morgan, MD, Neurosurgeon, bass player, philanthropist – Dominant.

He doesn’t do girlfriends, he doesn’t do sleepovers, and he certainly doesn’t do breakfast in bed the morning after. He has his surgical slate at New York Presbyterian, he has a charitable foundation providing surgical tools to hospitals in Africa, he has his Brit Invasion cover band, Mersey, and he has his secret life as a Dominant in Manhattan’s BDSM community.  Into bondage, D/s and the occasional dungeon scene, Drake keeps every part of his life separate, the divisions between them neat and tidy. His weeks are filled with surgeries, music and D/s sex, and none of the well-planned and scheduled parts of his life intersect.
That is until Kate McDermott crosses his path and screws everything up.  Now, nothing is neat and tidy anymore, for Drake is smitten and things are going to get messy…
Drake Restrained is a novella in the Unrestrained Series, which explores the early days of the relationship between Drake and Kate from Drake’s point of view.

I headed to the washroom before leaving, making a quick pit stop, and on the way out, bumped into the pretty brunette. She pushed the door open to the woman’s washroom and knocked into me.  I had to grab her to keep her from falling, for she was wearing ridiculously high leather heels and hadn’t seemed to have mastered them.

Whoa,” I said, and caught her by the arms, pulling her against my body.  “Steady…”
“Oh, so sorry,” she said and grabbed onto my shoulders. She glanced up shyly, her cheeks reddening. “I’m not really used to these.”
In that moment, I was struck by the warmth of her body, the scent from her hair, and the soft curve of her breasts pressed against my chest.  She was deliciousI was probably half a foot taller than her even in her heels, and from my vantage point, I was able to peek down her dress and see the swell of her breasts pushed together by the tight bodice.
Now, I had admittedly had sex with a lot of women in my time. Before I was married, I played around a lot, trying to figure out what sex was all about and what I liked and needed. I was married for five years and had a lot of sex, especially in the first few years we were together. Since I divorced, I had quite a few submissives, both as regular play partners and one-offs I topped at dungeon parties.
I wasn’t an inexperienced teenager, but the way my body responded to her, you would have thought I hadn’t had sex for months instead of a week and a half.  In that second or two I had her in my arms, I imagined her naked, her body pressed against mine, her lips on my  skin.  God… She was lovelyShe smelled like shampoo and citrus.  I wanted to bury my face in her groin and inhale deeply.
I finally pulled myself together enough to respond. “Trying to defy the laws of physics?” I said and smiled as I helped steady her. I glanced down at her shoes once more. “Nice shoes though. Love the
leather straps…”
I would love to see her naked, my leather straps binding her body, looping around her tiny waist and over her hips, down between her thighs, splitting her labia…
“Thank you,” she said, straightening up with my help.  At that moment, I wished she were a submissive. She had creamy white skin, and looked to be of Celtic background with green eyes and long golden brown hair. Her shyness suggested she might incline towards submission, especially with someone older, but there was no way of knowing from such a momentary meeting. It was wishful thinking on my part.  She smiled briefly and then turned back to the bar as if she couldn’t wait to get away from me.
Despite my strong response to her, I knew she was right to do so for in that moment, I wanted her the way a wolf wants a doe, the need to possess her completely welling up inside of me more powerfully than it had in a long time.
Run away, little girl. You don’t belong with someone like me.

What is definitely not part of the plan is the return of her long-lost father, who claims he can bring Allison’s mother back from the dark place her mind has gone. Allison doesn’t trust her father, so why would she believe his stories about a long forgotten Irish people, the Tuatha de Danaan? But truths have a way of revealing themselves. Secrets will eventually surface. And Allison must learn to set aside her plan and work with her father if there is even a small chance it could restore her mother’s sanity.

Imogen Summerhill, box office darling, has never wanted to be in the spotlight less.  When racy photos—and video!—are leaked by her sleazy ex, her studio couldn’t be happier. All press is good press, and this will only enhance the intrigue about her upcoming blockbuster. But how is Gigi supposed to be taken seriously as an actress with all this inappropriate buzz? She’s Cate Blanchett, not Kim Kardashian.

But then Gigi meets Merrick Graham, the Bad Boy of Politics. The last thing either of them wants is to be tainted by more scandal: he needs the support of the conservatives, and she wants to untarnish her image.  Only they can’t resist each other—separately they’re good, but in the bedroom they’re even better. They can’t be seen together in public, but in private all’s fair game, and there’s plenty of room to misbehave…

My Rating: 5/5 stars

My Review:

What do you do when your tool bag (oh yes, the whole bag!) of a boyfriend sells a highly suggestive video of the two you engaged in some naughty business? Well, if you’re Imogen Summerhill, acclaimed and bombshellish actress, you run home to England and hide out with the family until all the press dies down.

For Imogen, the shock of the video isn’t so much about the video but about the betrayal of a man she trusted. Nursing a broken heart and determined to ride out the storm, Imogen (affectionately known as Gigi) returns to the Sumemrhill home and the safety of her family. The added bonus to the extended stay is the opportunity to better know her sisters and with their help, the heartbreak slowly begins to fade and Imogen once again starts to focus on her career. Here’s the rub: Imogen wants to be taken seriously as an actress and respected for her talent and not her “assets” but her studio wants to play up the drama and see Imogen cast as the naughty bombshell the world believes her to be. In order to salvage her career in an acceptable manner, maintain her dignity and, with any luck win an Oscar down the road, Imogen has to keep her nose clean and stay out of trouble. Yeah, right!

Merrick (aka Ricky Hazard) lives a very public life of service and his one and only goal is to pass legislation that will prevent senseless killings like the one that took his sister years and years ago. The only remnant of his former life is his best friend Valerie, a woman who loves him dearly (but ONLY as a friend) and wants to see him successful and happy. Unfortunately, Merrick is certain those two things can no longer coexist for him and as a result lives his life rather like a monk denying himself many simple pleasures. Luckily for Merrick, Valerie is all kinds of up in his business and the minute she sees Merrick uncharacteristically turn his eye toward a woman she is all over getting the two connected. Too bad that woman is Imogen Summerhill, the one woman in the world who wants to stay out of the press and avoid scandal even more than Merrick does.

As fate (and Kate Perry!) would have it, Imogen and Merrick do meet and within moments each is intrigued and attracted to the other. The attraction is ridiculously strong and prompts Imogen to ask her trusted assistant to track down Merrick’s contact information. A flirty text or two later and the two are meeting clandestinely J Per Imogen’s request and with Merrick’s absolute agreement, the meetings are to remain clandestine as neither can afford the “bad” press. For a time the arrangement works well for both but inevitably, the feelings grow and the couple has to decide what their future is or can be. Before that conversation can happen though, Imogen is inexplicably outed to the press, Merrick’s legislation is threatened and, the tool bag makes an unwanted and unexpected appearance and all but begs Imogen to come back. As required, the Summerhill sisters rally around their own, help Imogen through yet another betrayal and more than a little anger and, Bea (yet again!) offers to have someone killed. WOW!! I love those sisters 🙂

The Bottom Line: Kate Perry is on a roll and I am loving this series more and more with every single addition!! Plainly put, this is top-notch writing with fantastic characters who are constantly evolving, excellent dialogue and, plots that are remaining fresh and true to the characters. Furthermore, old favorites make appearances, the new characters add significantly to the read, Bea offers to have someone killed and, everything just fits together. In all honesty, the ride each sister takes me on is so damn entertaining that I don’t care that I know how it is all going to turn out in the end. Additionally, I am quite thankful that Jacqueline Summerhill was exceptionally fertile – that just means more sisters and more books for me to fall in love with!! And quite frankly, I am OK with that 🙂

Excerpt from Intrigued and Enchanted:

As usual, I am so caught up in my own head that I’m not really paying attention to my surroundings.  I am so oblivious, I don’t even know what hits me. I find myself falling to the ground, my books and bag in the air, my coffee colliding with and slowly sinking into the grass.  My only thought is that I am about to smack my head of the ground and do myself some major damage, which I am not looking forward to.  I only realize when the pain doesn’t come, that I am being held just shy of the ground by a very strong, warm, and hard, pair of arms.
