I am not a slut, although I’ve been called one often enough. Yeah, I spent three months screwing one of my college professors, but I was crazy about the guy. Then he broke up with me.  I am not a bitch, although people like to say I am. I kept our relationship secret. I’m not responsible for telling the university administrators about it, but a lot of students still blame me for getting their favorite professor fired.  I am not a drama queen, although everyone thinks I am now. When I got a few nasty messages, I just deleted them. When I got the threat, I assumed it was someone being stupid. I still think that’s all it was. My parents worry, though, so they hired me a bodyguard. Now Jack follows me around, intimidating everyone who approaches me and looking obnoxiously hot.  This is what I am. I’m Chloe. I’m a twenty-year-old art history major. Kind of shy, although I pretend not to be. Stubborn enough to stay here for my senior year, even though everyone hates me.  And I’m stuck with Jack.  He calls me “Princess,” but I’m not a princess either.

My Review:

To date, Chloe Barlow has lived a charmed life.  She is an art history major at a private college, she is the only child of wealthy, loving, and somewhat indulgent parents, she has a lovely apartment near campus and, a track record in school that is sure to land her a fantastic job post-grad.  And then, the world shifts and everything that was once good and possible has vanished.

For three blissful months, Chloe indulged in an illicit affair with one of her former professors.  He was one of the most popular professors on campus and one of the most attractive and Chloe just simply couldn’t help herself.  For a very brief moment in time, all was right with the world.  Unfortunately, the college administration doesn’t so much care about the former part and most of the student body is fantastically pissed that the spoiled little rich girl got the cool professor fired.  To add insult to injury, Chloe can’t go anywhere on campus without being glared at or insulted or threatened.  While Chloe certainly doesn’t like the treatment, she can get through it.  Hoping, as all people do in such situations, to fly under the radar until the drama blows over, Chloe attempts to move forward with her classes and her life.  Moving forward might be easier to do if it weren’t for Jack, the totally delectable and completely obnoxious bodyguard hired by her parents to watch over her.

Jack!  While Chloe might find him intrusive and obnoxious she knows his presence in her life is a necessary evil.  Though she doesn’t really think the death threat is serious, she doesn’t want to worry her parents more than she already has so she agrees to Jack.  Jack takes his job seriously even if he doesn’t initially think the threat to Chloe is serious.  All that changes however when a horrible and graphic Tumblr page is launched and another death threat comes through shaking both Chloe and Jack.  Jack’s intensity level reaches supernova and both she and Jack have to accept that there is a real threat to be dealt with.  To make the situation even more intense (and enjoyable!!), both Jack and Chloe have to accept that they are so deep in lust with one another they have no chance of escaping their feelings.  But, giving into their feelings can, almost inexplicably make everything worse.

The crap that goes down between Jack and Chloe’s initial meeting and their HEA is all kinds of dramatic.  Chloe throws a fantastic fit or two, Jack kicks the crap out of more than one person and, the two of them together have some very, very spectacular sex.  Seriously, their naughty bits are all kinds of sexy!!  But, make no mistake, the read isn’t all about the sex.  Curtis manages to skillfully weave the sex into the plot in a logical and totally non-gratuitous way – in many ways, the intensity of Jack and Chloe’s unions is mirrored by the intensity of Chloe’s personal trials.  One enhances the other and makes the read all the more enjoyable.

The Bottom Line: Pretty much from the beginning, I was hooked on this character-driven read.  Did I mention it was a one-sitting read for me? 🙂  Even in her most petulant moments, I liked Chloe.  She made a huge mistake and rather than running away from it, she is staying to face the music, as it were.  To be fair, her insistence on staying is a bit misguided but still, damn courageous.  Jack is just the right blend of intensity, sexy, honor, broken and, lickability.  Bound and determined to do the right thing, Jack makes mistakes as well but, in the end, he and Chloe come together in a most magnificent way.  Additionally, both Chloe and Jack find resolution and peace where their respective situations.  For Jack, this is a huge and rather life-changing experience.  And just when you think everything is wrapped up all nice and neat, there is that bombshell that gets dropped on the very last page . . . . Yep, I am so ready for more 🙂
