A New Adult Romance Novel by USA Today Bestselling Author Priscilla West

Two years ago, Lorrie’s mother was murdered. But that wasn’t the end of it. Reeling from the tragedy, Lorrie’s father spiraled into alcohol, depression, and finally suicide.  The two most important people in Lorrie’s life are both gone but she’s still alive.  Trying to recover from the tragedy, Lorrie returns to campus, ready to pick up the pieces of her life. All Lorrie wants is to get back to “normal.”  Then she meets Hunter. The man, the legend, “The Hammer.”

Hunter is a cage fighter who takes on every fight like he’s got nothing to lose. His life is a tangled mess of girls, booze, and fist fights. And while it may seem like he’s got a devil-may-care attitude, he’s fighting a private cage-match with a monster he can’t defeat.  Lorrie knows that Hunter is exactly the type of guy she should stay away from, especially in her fragile state, but Hunter has other ideas.  As Hunter and Lorrie grow closer together, will they be able to overcome their pain and heal each other? Or will they both end up wrecked?

My Review:

Lorrie Burnham is the very definition of tragic; her mother was brutally murdered and her father, though divorced from her mother, was too weak to deal with his ex-wife’s death and took his own life.  After several semesters away from college Lorrie finally feels capable of handling a return to campus in an effort to get her life back on track.  To be fair, capable is a bit of a stretch and Lorrie knows absolutely that her return to campus and her success will depend on her staying focused and avoiding emotional entanglements if at all possible.  Less than 48 hours after her return to campus, Lorrie’s grand plan gets totally and completely trashed after she falls into a freezing lake and is fished out by the single hottest man she has ever seen.

Hunter Jensen never suspected when he left his apartment for his morning run that he would spend the bulk of his time in a near-frozen lake rescuing a girl who was apparently trying to kill herself.  After a bit of an ass-chewing over her stupidity and a trip back to his apartment for a shower and clean clothes, Hunter comes out of his bathroom expecting to continue his conversation with Lorrie but discovers she has slipped out . . . and taken his clothes and trash with her.  Yeah, she took his trash and that has Hunter absolutely intrigued.  Like Lorrie, Hunter has a tendency to avoid emotional entanglements but Lorrie may just make him break his own rules.

Mortified by her actions (did she really take his trash??), Lorrie returns to her dorm room and curses her body’s response to Hunter.  Yeah, he saved her life and he looks very, very good in nothing but a towel but there is a plan in place!  If Lorrie is to survive and move on with her life, Hunter must not be allowed to muddle her mind and confuse her emotions.  Yet another loss would quite simply be too much for her to handle and Hunter would certainly prove to be a loss in the long run.  Fate and a devious author however always have different plans.

Though he doesn’t actively seek out Lorrie, Hunter certainly doesn’t pass up an opportunity to spend time with her when he runs into her a few nights later.  Over the next days and weeks, Lorrie and Hunter develop a fine friendship with Lorrie constantly denying her attraction to Hunter and Hunter being a perfect gentleman.  Lorrie knows she is attracted to Hunter and loves spending time with him – and the litter of kittens they adopted – but she just can’t allow herself to get closer.  For Hunter’s part, he doesn’t want to deny his attraction to Lorrie, he wants to be with her in every way possible but he will not violate her wishes and, there is a very large secret about his life that he isn’t comfortable sharing with anyone and could dramatically impact his future.  Between the two of them, they are an emotional train wreck waiting to happen.

But hey, it wouldn’t be a good read if Hunter and Lorrie didn’t give it a go, right?  And give it a go they do and it is an amazing, naughty, sexy, emotional and, sweaty go!!  Unfortunately, the real world is a heartless bitch and almost instantly problems begin to crop up in the new relationship.  To be fair to both parties, both Hunter and Lorrie want the relationship to work but it just doesn’t seem possible.  Lorrie is still an emotional wreck due to her background and growing feelings for Hunter and Hunter seems to always run hot and cold.  Each is extraordinarily stubborn and the ultimate clash between them is fantastically wretched!

The Bottom Line: Overall, I enjoyed this read and will certainly read the second book.  However, I am a big, big fan of character history and backstories and I didn’t get near enough of that in Wrecked.  In fact, it wasn’t until the last few chapters that we discover what Hunter’s big, scary secret is.  Further, I tend to get frustrated with characters who are more stubborn than I am (and I’m a Taurus!) and who tend to create more problems and drama for themselves because of their stubbornness.  With all this being said, I would still absolutely recommend this read to others.  Even with their flaws, the characters are strong, the plot is interesting, the sex is steamy, the kittens are adorable and, the ending is both revealing and explosive.  West has a fine writing style even though I didn’t get everything I wanted out of this read, I still enjoyed it 🙂
