Synopsis:

Sixteen-year-old Sophie Bloom wishes she’d been taught the following:
a) Bad boy’s presence (TrOuBlE) + teen girl’s brain (DraMa) = TrAuMa (Highly unstable and very volatile.)
b) The Genus Greekulum Godissimus is notable for three traits: 1) awesome abilities, 2) grudges, and 3) hook-ups, break-ups, and in-fighting that puts cable to shame.

Prior to the Halloween dance, Sophie figures her worst problems involve adolescent theatrics, bitchy teen yoga girls, and being on probation at her boarding school for mouthy behaviour. Then she meets bad boy Kai and gets the kiss that rocks her world.

Literally.

This breath stealing lip lock reawakens Sophie’s true identity: Persephone, Goddess of Spring. She’s key to saving humanity in the war between the Underworld and Olympus, target numero uno of Hades and Zeus, and totally screwed.

Plus there’s also the little issue that Sophie’s last memory as Persephone was just before someone tried to murder her.

Big picture: master her powers, get her memories back, defeat Persephone’s would be assassin, and save the world. Also, sneak into the Underworld to retrieve stolen property, battle the minions of Hades and Zeus, outwit psycho nymphs, slay a dragon, rescue a classmate, keep from getting her butt expelled from the one place designed to keep her safe …

… and stop kissing Kai, Prince of the Underworld.

My Ex From Hell is a YA romantic comedy/Greek mythology smackdown. Love meets comedy with a whole lot of sass in book one of this teen fantasy romance series. Compared to Kai and Sophie, Romeo and Juliet had it easy.

My Review:

I have said it before and I will say it again, high school sucks!!  For Sophie Bloom that has sort of never been more true.  Sophie is a student at the totally pretentious Hope Park Progressive School and while she was stuck there by her socialite mother, Felicia at least she is stuck there with her two best friends, Hannah and Theo.  But even Hannah and Theo can’t keep Sophie out of trouble and for what is likely the thousandth time, they watch as Sophie is once again put on probation as a result of her smart mouth. And then, there is the moment Sophie unveils her plans for her nemesis, Bethany.  The plan may involve laxatives, a wig and snagging the hot new guy Bethany has been all kinds of bragging about.  If caught, this theoretical plan may even get Sophie kicked out of Hope Park.  J

The plan is ingenious and everything is going according to plan until, the kiss.  Kai, that hot new guy that Bethany just kept going on about turns out to be one hell of a kisser.  Oh, and he also happens to literally be from Hell and induces a splitting, migraine level headache that comes with a truly creepy slide show.  Needless to say, Sophie’s grand plan just fell right the hell apart and things are about to get a whole hell of a lot worse.  Turns out, Sophie Bloom is more than just a mere mortal with a smart mouth, she’s also the goddess Persephone and Kai just happens to be her ex.  Well, hell!

Once the migraine level headache subsides and Sophie can think again, she divulges everything to Hannah and Theo and much to everyone’s surprise, Theo knows a whole lot about what’s going on.  In fact, Theo is not only able to explain what’s going on right now but is able to explain Sophie – sorry, Persephone’s – entire history.  The only problem is that he won’t divulge everything and insists that Sophie has to wait for all of her/Persephone’s memories to return on their own.  In the meantime, stay away from Kai, try to avoid the two super-baddies who want her dead, definitely stop kissing Kai, do NOT ever leave the protection of school grounds, stop thinking about Kai, learn how to use and control the awesome new powers, and try to figure out how all the high school weirdness is related to Sophie and how she can stop it.  And, could there possibly be a cherry on top of this crap sundae?  Why yes, yes there is and it is in the shape of a dragon.  Bugger all!!

The Bottom Line: Though it takes My Ex just a tiny little bit to get going, once it does, the shenanigans and the drama never end, they just slow down a bit to recharge.  Darling has taken high school drama to an entirely new level and I am so glad I picked this one up.  I absolutely adore Sophie and her smart mouth and sarcasm are just two of her finer qualities.  I also enjoyed the fact that Sophie didn’t go into four chapters of denial before accepting the reality of her situation; Sophie accepts, plans and, executes.  All qualities I like in my characters J  While Sophie is the focus of this read, the other characters such as Hannah, Theo and Kai are significant and well developed with individual personalities and quirks and room to grow within the larger series.  All qualities I like in my characters J

Overall, I was thoroughly pleased with Darling’s first installment of The Blooming Goddess Trilogy.  Good plot, good, characters, good dialogue (loves me some sarcasm!) and good writing all come together in this fun, mythology-inspired read.

Synopsis:

Sophie Bloom’s junior year has been a bit of a train wreck. After the world’s greatest kiss re-awakened Sophie’s true identity as Persephone (Goddess of Spring and Savior of Humanity), she fought her dragon-lady guidance counselor to the death, navigated mean girl Bethany’s bitchy troublemaking, and dealt with the betrayal of her backstabbing ex, Kai (sexy Prince of Darkness). You’d think a girl could catch a break.

Yeah, right.

With Zeus stepping things up, it’s vital that Sophie retrieve Persephone’s memories and discover the location of the ritual to stop Zeus and Hades. So when Aphrodite strikes a deal that can unlock Sophie’s pre-mortal past, what choice does the teen goddess have but to accept?

The mission: stop media mogul Hermes from turning Bethany into a global mega-celebrity. The catch? Aphrodite partners Sophie and Kai to work together … and treat this suicide mission as a date. Which could work out for Sophie’s plan to force Kai to admit his feelings for her–if she doesn’t kill him first.

Add to that the fact that BFF Theo’s love life and other BFF Hannah’s actual life are in Sophie’s hands, and suddenly being a teenager—even a godlike one—seems a bit like … well, hell. Whatever happened to dinner and a movie?

The YA romantic comedy/Greek mythology fireworks continue to fly in My Date From Hell. Love meets comedy with a whole lot of sass in book two of this teen fantasy romance series. Breaking up is easy; dating is deadly.
