Synopsis:

In this action-packed second installment of The Samantha Project series, Samantha and Erik go on a search to find a way to save themselves from the genetic time bomb ticking away in their cells. Along the way, they discover a shocking secret–one they wish they were never told!

Although Samantha’s boyfriend, Colin, is back now, her feelings for Erik are getting stronger by the minute. It isn’t long before she finally learns the real reason why she can’t resist Erik. But only after she’s gone too far with him! So far that Colin may never forgive her.

GlobalLife Genetics continues to pursue Samantha and they’ll stop at nothing to get her. Sam still doesn’t understand what GlobalLife’s plan is for her but she knows it’s something big. And she knows it isn’t good.

Guest Post: Ten Facts about The Golden Couple (Book #2: The Samantha Project Series):

1. The Golden Ratio is an ancient mathematical formula that some say signifies perfection. You can see it in nature, including human DNA. It’s also found in the works of Da Vinci and other famous artists as well as the Egyptian pyramids and the Greek Parthenon.

2. GlobalLife Genetics is a multinational corporation that started the genetic enhancement research which is now known as The Samantha Project. The project is funded by The Founders, an elite secret society made up of world leaders, top military personnel, and other powerful and extremely wealthy individuals.

3. Erik excels at math and is skilled at solving secret codes. His code-solving is what opens an encrypted file that unlocks a secret about what’s in his and Samantha’s cells.

4. Samantha and Erik both have enhanced genes, giving them similar powers. But Samantha has additional powers because GlobalLife had access to her for so many years. For example, she has dreams about future events but Erik does not. She also has scenario streaming, in which her brain tells her how to get out of dangerous situations in times of stress.

5. Since GlobalLife had access to Samantha growing up, they were able to constantly monitor and adjust the software controlling her genes. Every time she went to the doctor, she was being unknowingly treated by a GlobalLife employee. Even her perfect, never-does-anything-wrong personality was software driven. When GlobalLife loses track of her, her true personality can finally come out.

6. Everyone has the base codes A, T, C, and G in their DNA. But Sam and Erik have two more base codes in certain sections of their enhanced genes. The source of these unique base codes is revealed in The Golden Couple.

7. GlobalLife inserted a genetic time bomb to go off in Samantha and Erik when they turn 20. If the timing device goes off, Samantha and Erik will be killed instantly. They need to find a way to turn it off fast because Erik is just a few months away from his 20th birthday.

8. Everyone has a unique brain wave pattern, much like a fingerprint. Because of that, you can use someone’s brain waves as a security device. It’s known as brain wave fingerprint technology and it’s used at GlobalLife Genetics (as well as in real life!).

9. In their search to turn off the deadly timer ticking away in their cells, Samantha and Erik must travel to Dana Point, California, up to Stanford University, then to Samantha’s hometown in Minnesota, and finally to Reykjavik, Iceland.

10. Nanoparticles are so tiny that they can cross cell membranes. The microcomputers running inside Samantha and Erik are the size of nanoparticles. These computers run the software that controls Samantha’s and Erik’s genes.

My Rating: 4½/5 stars

 My Review:

Bloody hell this book was hot and rather than taking this read apart bit by bit I am going to approach it in the same way the author did, character by character.  Here we go boys and girls . . . .

Cole: Bloody hell is there a sexier man alive in books right now?  Cole is hotness personified with his hard body, multiple tattoos (yummy!), ready to rumble (yes, I said rumble) at the drop of a hat attitude, his determination to make something more of himself and, his complete and utter devotion to his tiny little sister, Kelly.   Cole has a shit-tastic life and he is trying like hell to hold on to what he has.  His father is gone, his mother is a pathetic excuse for a human being drug addict, he runs/owns a bar alongside his brother Parker, and he is trying to get through college all while raising his little sister.  Cole is a bad bet for any woman right now and he knows it; too bad his heart isn’t listening to his head, huh?

Violet: Violet has run for life straight back to her Nana’s house in North Carolina and as far away from the press as she can get. Violet wass America’s country music sweetheart right up until the moment she was involved in a horrific car accident that she caused as a result of driving while drunk.  The press knows the basics but Violet knows the details.  The press can never and will never know the details because some things are just too painful to share with anyone else let alone the whole damn world.  For Violet, the only way she can process and deal with everything is to disappear to a place she knows she is safe and she is loved no matter what she has done.  Violet needs to heal and she certainly doesn’t need a man complicating matters; too bad her heart isn’t listening to her head, huh?

Cole and Violet: Together these two are molten hot and from the very beginning their attraction to one another is undeniable.  Logically they both know they have no business whatsoever indulging in the attraction but their hearts have totally different plans.  Cole sees Violet for who she is at her core, not the celebrity, press-enhanced version.  Violet sees Cole as the strong, dependable and caring man that he really is rather than the super-tough guy façade he presents to the world.  If the two of them can deal with all their collective baggage and some of the baggage that belongs to others in their respective lives, they just might have a shot at real and lasting happiness.

The Bottom Line: My only reservation about this book is the fact that I felt like I had missed something in a couple of spots.  I even flipped back a few pages to be sure and didn’t find anything I had missed so my single reservation comes in the form of a few weird/awkward transitions.  Beyond that, I am hooked on this book!

Marquita Valentine has made it abundantly clear to me that I like broken characters.  Not the whiny, I won’t ever get over myself and move on kind of broken but the Cole and Violet kind of broken.  Cole and Violet are survivors and even in their darkest moments – both independently and together – they know they will be able to pick up the pieces of their respective lives and move forward.  There is no looking back for these two and I respect their determination and will to achieve happiness.  These are strong characters that have been dealt a heaping pile of crap by life and are trying to get through it as best they can.  The sex scenes are straight up hot, the other characters are sufficiently interesting and, the dialogue is both appropriate and smooth.  Overall, I am a bit smitten with Cole and am certain I am going to be continuing my love affair with the Boys of the South series.  🙂

Synopsis:

How can you ever love again when tragedy has crushed your heart?

Kathleen used to love life. She had plans, dreams, and faith in life; but that was before the accident that took it all away from her in an instant. Now that her beloved brother is dead and she’s confined to a wheelchair, her future is but a dark cloud hovering above her head. How can she ever find the will to move on and keep living without him? Even the cares of the happy-go-lucky American physiotherapist who’s helping her with her rehab therapies are all in vain. Life seems to have lost its meaning, until one night she receives an unexpected celestial visit…

Colin has been working as a physiotherapist in Dublin for almost five years, but he’s never bonded so much with a patient like he is bonding with Kathleen; there’s something about those sad blue eyes that makes him want to help her, to take away the pain that reminds him so much of his own. Having lost both his parents in a plane crash when he was only sixteen, Colin knows how it feels to have someone you love taken so abruptly away from you, and he makes it his mission to help Kathleen find her faith in life again. But something changes along the way…

Sometimes love can work miracles. If you believe.

About the author and where to find her:

AuthorAn avid reader since her childhood years and being an only child, Roberta always enjoyed the company of her fictional friends from the children’s books she loved reading, while she dreamed of writing her own stories one day.

It was when she discovered novels by authors Rosamunde Pilcher and Maeve Binchy in her teenage years that she realized it was time she put down in words the stories she had kept well hidden in her mind until then.

What started as a hobby, soon turned into a real passion and a way of life, until she could no longer keep the stories to herself, and decided to get over her fears and share them with the world.

Roberta lives in Italy, but her dream is to move out of her country and live either in a thatched cottage in the Irish countryside or in a country house with a swing on the back porch, somewhere in the United States, where she would love to spend her days writing novels as a full-time job, and maybe one day even get as far as writing a screenplay for a movie.

The answer is just the beginning.

Megan Hand’s Writing Cave:

This is my cave. Isn’t it preety!!

IMG_0478

When I started writing again seriously, my cave was the kitchen table. This, of course, was before my hubs and I had our son. But Guitar Hero all nighters and the general fluctuations of people in and out of the house for social visits was not conducive to a calm or creative environment for me.

We did our office reno about half-way through my second book. This room had been previously assigned as my scrapbooking room/husband’s office. But since I was no longer scrapbooking—writing was my new obsession—I literally gave away all of my super cool crafting gear and we remade the office into the beauty that it is today. Being the chronic girly girl that I am, I couldn’t help but make sure that it was cutesy cute. Now I have the most perfect and peaceful place to escape to. It’s just too bad my three year old pretty much prevents mommy’s escape on a daily basis. And though I am an OCD neat freak, no, this space isn’t normally this clean, LOL.

I can write here occasionally when he’s asleep, but these days I mostly escape to the OSU campus library where I have to pay to park, but it’s so worth it because it’s beautiful and cozy and college-y, which is the perfect setting for my next character’s adventures 😉

About the author and where to find her:

megan handAt twelve, Megan decided to write a novel. A month later, she quit. A reading junkie by nature, she started writing again in her twenties as a way to get the voices out, because who wouldn’t want to create a Real Living Person out of thin air? Megan also plays the piano and sings. She teaches little kids and takes pictures of pretty butterflies. She eats way too much chocolate, is sort of a mad scientist with her blender, and spends an unhealthy amount of time LOLing on Facebook and Twitter. She lives in Ohio with her husband and very smiley son. Bitter Angel is her first published novel.

Synopsis:

Dead women are showing up in the desert east of San Diego, and no one understands why. When the story comes to the attention of reporter Natalie Ellis, she can’t help but make comparisons to tragic deaths she’d investigated years ago. Are these women the victims of a serial killer, or something even more insidious?

Bodies may be piling up in his sire’s territory, but water vampire and feared enforcer Baojia is stuck entertaining the rich and clueless at a club in San Diego. He’s taken his exile with all the grace he could muster, but his patience is starting to thin.

Sparks fly when mortal and immortal are thrown together, and Natalie comes face to face with a reality that was lurking in the corners of her life. Pursuing the truth could cost Baojia everything, including the mortal woman who has earned his grudging respect.

Blood and Sand is the second novel in the expanded Elemental World series.

My Rating: 5/5 stars

My Review:

One word: Ireadthisintwosittingsandcan’tcrappin’believehowdamngoodthisbookis!  Seriously, that’s just one word and every bit of it is true 🙂  Yet again, Elizabeth Hunter comes out swinging and delivers yet another fantastic Elemental World read.

Here’s the skinny: Baojia is still stuck in San Diego continuing to serve out the “sentence” meted out by his “father” Don Ernesto Alvaraz for “allowing” Beatrice de Novo (Don Ernesto’s great grand-daughter and Gio’s wife) to be hurt.  To say Baojia’s skills are being wasted doesn’t even come close and he is bored with life in oblivion.  In fact, the days (or rather nights J) have gotten so mind-numbingly boring that Baojia is considering taking his life in his hands and presenting himself to Don Ernesto to ask for a reduced sentence.  Lucky for Baojia, the boredom is about to be lifted and the sweet release comes in the form of a saucy and sexy little redhead by the name of Natalie Ellis.

Here’s the skinny: Natalie Ellis is a no-nonsense kind of girl with a rabid need for the truth and very little sense of self-preservation.  Natalie is an investigative reporter and once she has her sights set on a story there is nothing that is going to stop her from uncovering and reporting the truth.  The night she walks into Baojia’s club and starts asking questions alters the course of not only Natalie’s life but that of Baojia’s as well.

Here’s the skinny: There are girls dying in the desert at an alarming rate and no one seems to know how they died or who is leaving the victims.  Typical of Natalie, she begins poking around and asking questions that will get her answers just as fast as they will get her dead.  In order to protect Natalie, Baojia takes her under his personal protection and makes his way to Don Ernesto to discuss the little murder by vampire problem they seem to be having in their territory.  All kinds of hell breaks loose and Baojia and Natalie find themselves in the middle of a vampire shit-storm they are hoping can be calmed before they end up dead.

As with all of Elizabeth Hunter’s books, I fell into Blood and Sand like I fall into step with my husband of fifteen years.  Everything is comfortable, interesting, suspenseful, a bit naughty, and just flat-out good!  Natalie is smart, funny and like a dog with a bone where her need for answers is concerned while Baojia is tall, dark, fangy, and hot and only interested in keeping the fiery redhead safe and by his side!  Along with these two are some old friends including Gio and B, Dez and Matt, Carwyn and Brigid and, Ben and Tenzin.  Have I mentioned how much I LOVE TENZIN???  These characters are like old friends for me and I am so glad to see how large a role they are playing in the expanded version of Hunter’s Elemental World.  Furthermore, not only does Blood and Sand have its own specific plot but its plot ties into the larger series plot about Elixir and how the drug is destroying both humans and vampires.  Everything comes together flawlessly for a fast-paced, can’t put this book down read!

The Bottom Line: I have no idea (nor do I care to know!) how Elizabeth Hunter works her magic but with every new book I am completely taken in and consumed by what she has written.  Blood and Sand hits all the pertinent points for me: interesting short-term plot (check); the long-term plot line is advanced (check); solid, dependable, familiar and fun characters whom I love (check) and; excellent, witty and fun dialogue which carries the story (check).  I know I am gushing but this is a series and author I am passionate about and highly, highly recommend this book (and every other Elemental book by Hunter) to all fans of the paranormal, mystery, suspense and romance.  It’s all here for every NA+ reader.

Synopsis:

AVERY PIKE is a commodity. No, more than a commodity. Her existence is guarded at all costs.

She’s a water Elementalist, the strongest of her dwindling kind. She creates steam to provide energy to fuel Dome Three: the only thing standing between humanity and an earth ravaged by World War III. No steam, no Dome. No Dome, no life.

Or so she thinks.

That is, until a mysterious man offers her a way out of having to donate steam. A way to escape the corrupt government of Dome Three. While the offer seems too good to be true, Avery is intrigued.

But when she arrives to her new home, she realizes the grass isn’t any less dead on this side of the fence. Instead, the lies are just hidden better.

…Which means digging deeper.

When Avery enlists the help of her friends to uncover the truth, it may make her wonder if she was better off being a government tool than searching for freedom.

Some secrets are better left concealed, but humankind was never meant to live in a cage. And when you can control the most sought after resource, you can learn to control anything…including the fate of your world.

About the author and where to find her:

authorMegan began her journey into writing as a college junior during winter finals at the encouragement of a friend. What resulted was Bridger, Megan’s first full-length novel. Since then she has written the second book in the series, Traitor, and a stand-alone novel (which will hopefully become a series!) called The Guardian  Chronicles: Forbidden.

When not writing, Megan enjoys spending time with her husband, son, and Great Dane, aptly named Dozer. She enjoys snowboarding, playing xBox, and crocheting. Music is a huge part of her life and drives her writing. Her favorite bands are Muse, Bon Iver, Florence + the Machine, and The Civil Wars.

Megan resides in Kentucky, near two of her writerly tweeps Hope Collier and Beth Isaacs, and swears it’s Hope’s fault she’s living in the land of the banjos, but wouldn’t have it any other way.
