Synopsis:

When Drake started the night at his father’s campaign fundraiser, he never imagined he’d end it being conned into buying drugs on the West Side. Losing high-stakes poker has its consequences, but he’d repeatedly face them just to hear Lacey Douglas sing. Drake sees Lacey light up the stage, and he has to have her. But his intentions for being on her side of town turn out to be the reason he can’t.

Chicago native Lacey has dreams of the opera, but life has its obstacles. Lacey has come to know her hardships as part of living in the real world and accepts them fully. When Lacey meets the intense and invigorating Drake, a fire is lit inside her, unleashing those dreams again.

Two paths that should have never crossed prove to create the exact pairing the other needs. But when their worlds take time to catch up, everything they have is tested. Finding the space between the two sides that challenge them will be hard, but it’s the only place that will keep them together.

Excerpt from The Space Between:

Dropping my bag on the kitchen counter, I went to work. The dishes wouldn’t do themselves and since I was still new to the household’s staff, I wanted to make a good impression by getting all the housework done early.  I got all the dishes to one side of the sink, then started a bath of soapy water in the other side.  I pushed up my sleeves and a set of arms went around my waist.  My entire body froze instantly. Someone was in the house. Someone was in the house with their arms around me.  My first instinct was to slam my foot into their instep. I only hesitated because of the person’s smell. Warm spices and blood-sizzling juniper radiated throughout my vulnerable senses.  Drake.  I had no idea he was even here. If I did I wouldn’t have been wasting time washing dishes.  He only ran his hands at my waist at first, snuggling me into him. When his fingers brushed under my top, I grabbed his hands. “Drake. Your mom is supposed to be home soon.”  “Then we better make this quick,” he said, his rich velvet voice heating my blood.  Pushing further up my body, his massive hands covered my breasts.  “Drake, we really shouldn’t. Any minute she could come home.” I said this, but I didn’t stop him. I couldn’t stop him.  “Shh…” He breathed against my ear, massaging me. “Let me.”  Oh, god how I wanted him to.  “Please.” He gave my neck a single kiss.  My eyes fluttering, I leaned back into him. “Only a few kisses. Only a few moments of touching, then we have to stop. We have to.”  Pulling me into him, his kisses picked up on my neck. Got more aggressive. Turning my head, I caught his lips. I played with his tongue like that first night. He was so skilled, my core surged thinking about his other talents with it.  So distracted by how amazing his kiss was I didn’t stop him when one of his hands moved down my waist and to my leg. He gathered up the material of my skirt, and squeezed my thigh.  “Drake…” I spoke into our kiss.  “You said a few moments of touching. Please let me.”  I had no idea how far he intended to go. Entrapped by his kisses and touch, I couldn’t ask. I didn’t respond verbally, at all. I just moved my hips, and angled my thigh so he could touch me more.  Letting go of my breast, he moved his free hand to my other leg that ached to be touched. Bunching up the material, he made my skirt no longer an obstacle.  I now stood in the middle of the family kitchen with my underwear completely exposed.  He felt up my thighs for a bit, then his hand rested flat on the line of my panties. His other hand quickly joined the area, but didn’t stop. He moved downward and cupped me entirely with his large hand.  I sucked in a breath, fighting the rock of my hips. “Drake, we can’t. Your mom. She could be here any minute. She could see.”  “Lacey,” he said, pulling the material of my panties to the side with a long finger, “let me make you come.”  At those words, I was his.

Excerpt from Impassion, book two of the Mystic Series

“My questions are done now. No more asking for permission. I’m going to do what I want, and if you don’t like it, you’re going to have to tell me.”

Layla nodded as a shudder rocked her body. Just the thought of Quin doing what he wanted with her had her hips twitching like mad. When did she become so damn libidinous?

His satisfied smile stayed in place as he leaned close, perching his lips on hers. Then he softly kissed before pulling away. When his hand left her face, his t-shirt disappeared.

Layla flinched and blinked. Then she laughed as she rolled her eyes at herself. “That’s convenient.”

She looked at his exposed torso, and the next thing she knew, her fingers were on his ridged abdomen, like they had a mind of their own and were determined to explore every groove. She’d known he was muscular, but seeing him shirtless was like the unveiling of Michelangelo’s David, only way better, because Quin’s bronze skin felt nothing like cold, uninviting stone. Warm and smooth, it stretched over immaculate angles, tempting her to cuddle him like she would a fuzzy pillow or a furry kitten. He was beyond perfect, and she felt quite blessed her sense of touch was alive and well.

As she ran a fingernail along the defined indentation below his abs, a chill swept over her, and she looked down, gasping at her bare breasts. Her tank top was gone! She was shirtless!

“I’m not sure what possessed me to do it. Maybe it was the impossible expectations I faced, maybe it was my own self-loathing. But I just knew I needed something different to happen. I needed someone…something…to derail me from my current path. Otherwise, I would become lost…a hollowed out shell of a man. So I did it. I approached her, then I pursued her, then I made her mine. And my life was saved…”   Ryan Burnham is the privileged son of a U.S. Congressman and captain of his  university’s hockey team. While he is on the verge of fulfilling his dreams to play in the NHL, his parents want him on a different course. One he is expected  to accept for the sake of his family’s public image.   Forced to abandon her music career after the heart breaking death of her  parents, Danny Cross exists on the opposite side of the tracks from Ryan. She  is struggling to make her own way, working two jobs, attending college part  time and volunteering in a homeless shelter. She is on a mission to build her  own success.  With a chance meeting, their vastly different worlds collide, causing each to  evaluate whether they are truly on the correct path to self-fulfillment and  happiness. Can their relationship survive? Particularly when others are against  them every step of the way. A lot can happen in just ten short days…

Excerpt from Off Sides:

“You are so beautiful, Danny.”

“I could say the same about you.”

He gives me a hint of a smile but then his look turns molten. He leans in and kisses me gently. I follow his pace, soaking in the experience. I know I’m not losing my virginity tonight but I know I’m going to learn something new and I am tingling with anticipation.

Before long, our kisses turn more urgent. I feel like I am spinning out of control and Ryan masters my mouth. He commands it and it obeys him. My tongue and his move together and then apart. Needing to be together, then needing to roam.

Ryan’s hand grabs a hold of my waist and he pulls me closer to him, his fingers digging deliciously into my tender skin. He brings my pelvis flush with his and he groans when we make contact.

Sliding his hand up the back of my shirt, he gently caresses my back while moving his lips to my neck. He’s driving me crazy and every point of contact is burning where he touches and then freezing when it leaves. I’m in sensory overload and when his hand moves around to my front and gently cups my breast, I’m almost embarrassed over the guttural moan that escapes my lips.

“Sssshhhhh,” he soothes me, yet his hand fondles me with more urgency and I want him to slip it beneath the barrier of my bra.

All of a sudden, Ryan pulls back and I am bereft. I reach toward him and he takes one of my hands and kisses my fingers.

“I’m not going to make love to you, Danny.” I’m not sure if he says this to convince himself or me. “But, I would like to see and touch more of you. Will you let me?”

Excerpt from Released Souls, book three of the Witch Avenue series:

“You’ve really messed up our plans.” Lara squinted at me from across the room. I looked around to see Logan, but he was nowhere in sight. Rope that had been tied around my wrist was digging into my skin. I was in the office of a warehouse with rusty beams overhead and loose wire dangling. There was a window in the wall that divided this space from the rest of the warehouse. All I could see through the glass were boxes and crates stacked on top of one another. There looked to be barrels of chemicals out there too.

Lara began pacing, staring at the floor. She was dressed in a different outfit than I had seen her in previously. How long had I been out?

My tongue traced over a lump on my upper lip. I didn’t remember being hit, but I didn’t remember much of anything since the fogger was released at the house.

“What plans are those?” I asked, tipping my head up to meet her stare. The light from above caused me to squint.

“Don’t be cute. You may think disbanding the followers back east destroyed us, but it did nothing of the sort. We’ve got chapters all over the world, Triss, and they’re coming for you. If I don’t end you first.”

I shrugged my shoulders and my head fell back down.

“Why don’t you?” I asked.

“I might,” she paused briefly and looked at me. “I’m sure you’re wondering where Logan is. I don’t know if he told you, but we don’t enjoy letting our investments wander away. He’s our property.”

“Your property?” I growled, jerking my head back up.

Would they consider my mother their property?

“Well, he came willingly. We promised him that we’d let you go if he came without a ruckus.”

“I don’t believe you. He wouldn’t have agreed to that.”

“People do strange things for love. Look at your mother.”

The stinging began in my heart, but I wasn’t going to fall for it. Logan wouldn’t do anything like that. We were on the same page.

Lara began walking toward me and my pulse quickened. I wasn’t sure I wanted to see what she wanted to show me. She leaned over and loosened the rope from the wooden crate and pulled me to my feet and then immediately tightened the rope around my wrists as she led me to the window.

“Look out there. Do you see him?” she asked. I followed her finger that pointed to the far corner.

A gasp almost escaped, but I held it back. Logan was completely unconscious and tied to a chair. His head hung to the left, and the one eyelid that I could see looked swollen.

“Doesn’t look like he came willingly to me.”

“We had to persuade him a little, of course,” she replied.

“So you’re the head of the Venators?” I asked, attempting to buy time.

Lara’s lip curled up slightly. “What do you know about them?”

Synopsis from Goodreads:

The story of Nadira The Reader continues in Book Two of the Elysium Texts series.
At the dawn of the Renaissance a young woman finds herself in the midst of a clash of cultures.  Nadira has earned her place in the company of adventurers traveling to Istanbul to uncover something the Templar Knights lost 200 years before.  She brings with her the knowledge and skills she acquired from reading the Hermetica of Elysium and learns that she is the key the Templars need to unlock their past.  She is on her own quest to discover the source of the strange voice that spoke to her from the Hermetica.  She has been instructed to travel to Eleusis to study with the last priestess of the old religion. Lord Montrose becomes impatient with the Brotherhood’s mission. He is eager to turn his attention to seeking out and punishing his brother’s murderers who sail the Mediterranean hunting heretical manuscripts.  Friar William is in the throes of doubt as his faith is challenged by what he has learned from the alchemists.  The Templars have not been entirely honest with her, and when she realizes what it is they are after she is horrified to learn that not all knowledge brings a clear light to the mind.  There is some knowledge that darkens the soul and clouds the spirit.  What they want from her is no less than the harrowing of hell.
Nadira is told she must find and read the Necromancer’s Grimoire.

My Rating: 5/5 stars

My Review:

Annmarie Banks wastes no time in The Necromancer’s Grimoire, the second installment of The Elysium Texts series.  Grimoire begins just two days after the end of book one, The Hermetica of Elysium and is so smoothly connected to the first installment that I was able to fall right into the read and become immediately absorbed.

Nadira, Lord Montrose, and crew just can’t seem to find a moment of peace and while they are all together once again, they now find themselves indebted to the Knights Templar.  Nadira’s reputation has spread and the Knights believe it is she and she alone who can help them recover a precious artifact lost to the order more than 200 years ago.  While Lord Montrose is not pleased with the indebtedness he knows he must go along with the arrangement if he wants to continue to protect and be with Nadira.  For her part, Nadira has come to understand her gift is something someone somewhere will always want and her life will likely always be one of service if not servitude.  And thus, the journey to Istanbul begins.

Initially the relationship between Nadira and her men and the Knights is one of caution and wariness as each side seems to always be holding a little back from the other.  As their circumstances change, sometimes for the better and other times for the worse, each side learns they must trust one another if they are to complete their respective missions and survive.  Completing their respective missions is hindered at almost every turn by the Necromancer, a man who holds great sway in Istanbul thanks to his mastery of the Grimoire.  The Necromancer is an evil and greedy man who is willing to do whatever is necessary, no matter how heinous, in order to maintain his power and position.  As Nadira’s power continues to grow she understands she must not only take the Grimoire from the Necromancer but defeat him if she and her men are ever to be safe again.  Obviously, such an undertaking will be dangerous at best and deadly at worst and there will be collateral damage.

Here’s what I love about this book:

*the plot: it is both complicated and intricate while still being completely accessible.   Banks manages to pull every aspect of the plot, both major and minor, into one complete entity that is thoroughly engaging and interesting.

*the pacing: this is a long read yet Banks has ensured even in the quiet moments the reader is fully engaged.  In fact, it is during the quiet moments that the reader (and Nadira) gains the greatest information including loads of backstory on the various characters (YAY!!), precisely what the Grimoire is and how it can be used, and what Nadira must do to defeat the Necromancer.

*Nadira’s men: there is not a man in the group I dislike and am, in fact, very fond of each and every one of them.  There is her Lord (and husband!) Montrose, the enormous redhead (who finds a girlfriend!), the inquisitive and troubled friar turned apprentice, and the mute giant.  Nadira cherishes each man and never fails to use her power to come to their aid.  Most intriguing is how each of the men comes to trust Nadira even to the point of ignoring their instincts.  For example, when the men’s instincts are pushing them toward action, they heed Nadira’s advice to remain still.  This trust and mutual respect between Nadira and her men is one of my favorite parts of this read and allows the reader to become more fully attached to each character.

*Nadira: As Shakespeare once wrote “Though she be but little, she is fierce!”  That would pretty much cover it where Nadira is concerned.  She is immensely powerful and constantly growing in strength (the stopover in Eleusis! WOW!!) but remains pure in terms of her love, her power, and her knowledge.  She strives to know everything so she can make the most educated and well-informed decisions possible.  Though she endeavors to only use her gifts for good, Nadira is often forced into actions she despises in order to protect those she loves and holds dear.  Make no mistake, Nadira always protects those she calls her own and it is one of her finest qualities.

The Bottom Line: In all honesty, I have no complaints about this read other than the fact it ended and the third book is not yet available.  Banks hasn’t just written a story, she has created, crafted, and molded a world full of knowledge, faith and religion, mysticism and magic.  Also occupying this world are beautiful characters whose journey you willingly take with them despite the fear and the danger.  The world and the characters are real and for lovers of the medieval period and fantasy, this read is absolutely a must-read for you!

Synopsis:

Life doesn’t look like it’s supposed to for Daniela, aka Dani. After a painful break-up with Rick, Dani decides she doesn’t want to deal with the hassles of relationship.
After almost two years, Dani’s friends stage an intervention, forcing her out of her holding pattern and back into the real world of dating.
Liam, a down to earth firefighter, may be just the person to show her she’s still worth something. Their chemistry is instant and electric. But will Dani be able to trust her patched-up heart with him?
And what will happen when Rick decides he’ll go to any lengths to get her back?
